The Zeppelin airship attempted a Munich to Friedrichshafen flight today but was blown off course by a storm. After 11 hours aloft it landed safely at Dingolfing, 65 miles northeast of Munich, porting the journey.
The airship remains at Dingolfing awaiting calmer winds. Count Zeppelin’s return voyage from Friedrichshafen toward Munich faced squally weather and strong winds preventing a landing. A military balloon corps traveled by special train to assist as the ship drifted and preparations were made for a new attempt tomorrow morning.
Methuselah also known as Rameses Sr. died at age 10 in New York City. The toad, found two years earlier in a mine rock pocket near Butte Montana, was housed at the zoo where experts verified his long life ending from old age.
Sorrento April 1 The condition of F Marion Crawford shows further improvement but doctors fear a very slow convalescence due to prolonged illness and recent prostration. The town honored him with honorary citizenship and named the main thoroughfare after him.
James M. W. Hall of Cambridge testified in East Cambridge Probate Court about boxing his son-in-law's ears and seeing his grandchildren mistreated. The witness, father of Mrs. Alice K. Crossman, spoke amid a society crowd as he recounted past criticism from former President Roosevelt and detailed the case regarding separate support and custody of three children.
In testimony Mr. Hall describes his Cambridge roots and roles as mayor and Water Board chairman. He details family ties eight children four daughters four sons and recounts Fred A. Crossman’s finances, marriage, and moves between Providence Cambridge and the West, noting a $40,000 to $84,710 resource statement and a likely Providence heir claim.
Pierce Ok April 1 The Creek uprising, once seen as serious, is nearly over. Within a day or two militia withdrawal is expected. McIntosh county will hold 80 to 100 prisoners, none resisting arrest, while Chitti Harjo Crazy Snake will avoid public appearances with caution.
The article notes the subject was not captured today and did not answer a widely circulated surrender invitation. A picturesque posse ended the chase, leaving the First Regiment O. N. E. H. Harriman said he would defy the government over irrigation plans for Southern Pacific lands. Two men and a woman in a carriage escaped injury when Ladder 7 from Meeting House Mill struck and overturned their vehicle at Harvard and Abbot streets. Occupants were James H. Gulligan real estate agent M J McPartland and daughter Mary of Roxbury. Firemen assisted, then returned to a brush fire on Morton street with no injuries reported.
An unidentified stoker in the boiler rooms of the French liner Touraine acted quickly to shut a steam valve after a main feed pipe exploded, saving many lives and preventing fatal scalding of two fellow stokers who were burned. one lost an arm and both were fatally injured.
The Touraine was crippled by a boiler explosion and forced to port. Firemen François Ropers, 26, and Martel Bession, 32, burned over their bodies and one lost an arm. Both injured men were in the stokers’ room when the blast sent boiling water over them. Crew members aided in rescue before the two men were taken to a tug and brought to the city.
In Juvisy France on April 1 Archbishop Aniette of Paris with the coadjutor and many clergy blessed the new aerodrome and two Voison aeroplanes before a large crowd that included Count Boni de Castellane and his children. He praised progress and church support for human industry as man seeks the air and not the earth.
Hyde Park April 1 three wanderers from New York including a Roxbury youth raided a Readville baker cart. After a pursuit by Readville and local officers the three were captured near Mill Island crossing the Neponset River. One assailed officer and several citizens during the chase. Names given: John F. Quinn 18 New York Joseph A. Carroll 17 Roxbury Boston Frank E. Griffin 17 New York. a fourth youth escaped.
The Red Sox defeated Nashville 9 to 2 but played poorly overall. Other notes include Dover swamp Georgia College nine and Jeffries not likely to meet Johnson, with Longboat favored in Saturday’s marathon.
Oscar Hammerstein plans a Boston production of Salome with Mary Garden starring. A special matinee is set for next Thursday afternoon at the Boston Theatre. The plan includes an enlarged orchestra and doubled ticket prices.
Richard Strauss operatic master work will be presented in a special daytime performance next Thursday at 2 30 o clock in the Boston Theatre. The announcement was made by Mr Hammerstein by wire before his departure from Boston. Continued on Page 9 Fifth Column
President Charles W. Eliot of Harvard arrived in Montclair and Newark to address the Teachers' Alliance. He refused to discuss a Washington report offering him the Great Britain ambassadorship, saying only that information would come from Washington and a statement may follow tomorrow.
Beating United States Steel Corporation, independent steel concerns closed a deal today for 100000 acres of Pittsburg coking coal in Greene Fayette and Washington counties Pennsylvania at a cost price of 50000000.
The Georgia convict system ends sale of inmates for mines kilns and factories. About 1600 prisoners, mostly Black, are returned to counties to toil on public roads under state supervision. Prisoners shout with joy, while Black preachers lead praise as trains relocate them to new quarters. The reform aims to improve health and yield a first rate Southern turnpike.
The Post retracts its yesterday headline and pictures tying General James G. White to a graft scheme over a rifle range purchase for Boston. It states any inference against him is unjustified and issues the correction at once.
Pittsburg April 1 One man was killed and another probably fatally wounded in a riot between miners formerly employed at the Harwick mines of the Allegheny Coal Company at Cheswick near here and two deputy constables.
Weather outlook for New England shows fair conditions Friday and Saturday turning partly cloudy with rising temperatures. Steamship departures Friday to European ports expect light to moderate variable winds and fair weather to the Grand Banks.
