Disaster in Vineyard Sound sinks schooner Abraham Richardson
The Bangor schooner Abraham Richardson, captained by Pomeroy from South Amboy to Rockland, was sunk in Vineyard Sound off East Chop after a collision with barge Alaska. All crew were saved. the uninsured vessel carried 213 tons of coal and was owned by F. W. Ayer & Co. of Bangor. The accident occurred when steering gear failed, steering the vessel into the barge, causing a rapid sinking.
