South African mail reports a Cape Town theatre fire ending Mrs Potter and Kyrle Bellew's tour. Losses include £1500 in costumes, £1600 in jewelry, with Kean's dagger worn by Mrs Potter. Imprisonment over debt claims was halted when Alfred Bell posted bail. the couple head to London seeking a theatre to rebuild fortunes.

The Minnesota Democratic State convention endorsed Grover Cleveland with enthusiastic cheers. Alfred E. Haven presided as resolutions urged unity and support for Cleveland and the national convention vote to be by unit. Delegates-at-large named Michael Doran P B Winston Lewis Bauler Thomas Wilson. Daniel W Lawler praised Cleveland and a firm platform backed his nomination.

In Association Hall the Hyde Park caucus elected delegates with R E Cherrington as chairman and Emerson Rice as secretary. State delegates include Charles F Jennay CR Whitcomb Joseph McDermott C J OHern Edmund Davis N P Kappler and Emerson Rice. District delegates include James E Cotter Robert Bleakie W B O'Brien G Chick John H McKenna Thomas Murray and Rk E Cherrington. State delegates were instructed to back Cleveland delegates to the national convention. District delegates were instructed to back Robert Bleakie.
Democratic ward caucuses in Haverhill chose delegates for the district convention in Salem and the state convention in Boston. Ward 1 selections include J. P. Dear born, J. H. Nolan, J. E. Dewey. Ward 2 district delegates named Charles K Kelley and Cleveland Gonid.
In Wakefield on March 31 the Democratic delegate caucus chose officers and delegates. Chairman Michael Low and Secretary Thomas Hickey were elected. State delegates named were James H. Carter W. E. Cowdrey E. A. Upton J. D. Jones T. E. Balch A. W. Brownell. District delegates include Michael Low E. H. Waldron J. Fred Parker S. K. Hamilton Thomas E Dwyer and Thomas Hickey. All selections support Cleveland.

A large three-alarm blaze at a Zeigler street livery and adjacent barn damaged Lord & Co. facilities. Seventy-five horses were safely led away, with losses around $8000, largely from hay and carriages. Firefighters saved adjoining stables as Mrs Harrington’s home parrot commented from the doorway.
Denver March 31 The closing down movement in Colorado silver mines continues. The Calmartine mine in Idaho Springs district orders a 50 cent per day wage cut or closure. Last Chance at Creede may shut as workers are laid off. Aspen mine top men were paid off. layoffs expected by the fourth with payday on the fifth. Judge Morse plans to close all silver properties in Gilpin county. Other mines weighing suspension.
North Brookfield March 30. Town clerk opens meeting with T. C. Bates as moderator and water commissioners chair as plans are read. A proposed works include a dam at Stoddard's Brook and Bell Hill reservoir costing 484,000, plus a filter well plan at Bigelow Hollow for 28,000 to Mt Pleasant. Stoddard Brook plan approved 241 to 114, and 100,090 budget set for ten annual payments.
At a Democratic caucus on Wednesday night the body unanimously instructed delegates to vote for national convention delegates who pledge to support Grover Cleveland for the Democratic nomination. Mark Jewett and Albert E. Bailey named as State convention delegates and Charles H. Perley and L. M. Emerson as district convention delegates. George L. Prime served as chairman with Albert E. Bailey as secretary.
Washington March 81 House agriculture committees finished debate on a bill regulating options and futures. A substitute bill, milder than the Hatch proposal, will be sent to the House once the accompanying report is completed. It aims to satisfy many boards of trade opposing stricter measures.
Patrick Connell, found guilty of daylight assault on a woman in Washington street Roslindale on February 22, appeared for sentence in Superior Criminal Court after a leniency plea. Judge Sherman sentenced him to eighteen months in the House of Correction. The court expressed sympathy for his dependent wife and children, but emphasized protection of decent women.
Washington March 31 The Connecticut Representative DeForest has been added to the Democratic congressional campaign committee membership.
