London reports a likely European war within days as Germany mobilizes on the eastern front and Russia orders partial mobilization. Public streets flood with pro war displays as officials push to maintain peace.
Mrs. S. M. Ralston will host a two day house party in Indianapolis for her daughter Ruth with guests from Lebanon Danville Bloomington and Indianapolis. Chaperone Jane Wood will accompany the group which includes Hazel Henderson Mabel Burgin Magdalene Mitchell Mary Elizabeth Heaton Helen Loose Katharine Long Pharos Felker Viola Nealis Georgia Rowan Avalon Busby Katharine Parkhurst and Dorothy Felker. The visit features a trip to James Whitcomb Riley's home and events planned for every moment of the stay.
Almeda Kiste and four children were brought from Crawfordsville to Boone County and turned over to local authorities. The Board of Children's Guardians filed a ward petition, a judge’s chamber trial followed, and the three oldest children were declared wards and to be sent to the Indianapolis orphans home. St Petersburg July 30 news reports Russia ordered partial mobilization of fourteen army corps totaling about 1.12 million men. The move summons reservists from twenty three governates and seventy one districts plus naval reservists across twelve guberns and one Finnish government. Cossacks from Don Kuban Terek and other territories also called up. Russia will field over two million troops with reserve officers needed.
Berlin dispatch reports a fierce clash east of Fotcha with Austrians and Servians. Servians retreat in defeat as two of King Peter's divisions are driven back and one captured. Tages Zeitung cites 800 Servian casualties and 200 Austrian. About 4,000 prisoners said taken by Austrians during the Drina river crossing and ensuing shelling.
Vienna reports Belgrade, Serbia capital, has fallen after heavy bombardment by Austro-Hungarian gunboats on the Danube. A pontoon bridge construction was halted as Serbs blew the crossing, with public buildings hit and the fortress reduced. Casualties included non combatants wounded and Austrian losses from Serbian sharpshooters.
Report estimates that up to one million American men could depart to Europe to aid their mother countries if war widens. More than 2,000 Austrians and 5,900 Servians are already in New York or en route home to fight. Census shows over 8.5 million European born males over 21 in the United States, with about one third likely to return to battle fronts.
Charles Petig, proprietor of Candy Kitchen on the south side of the square, bought a new iceless soda fountain from the J. R. Neff firm of Indianapolis. Six workmen will install it tomorrow, as three motor trucks bring it in. The sixteen foot unit includes a receptacle for glasses when not in use and adapts to a likely state law requiring glasses to be kept covered or in water.
A lawn party for young ladies and their gentlemen friends was hosted at Miss Jane Woods on North Lebanon Street Wednesday evening. Afterward the hosts and guests, including Bert Winters Ora Beck Baron Mitchell Frank Adney Carl Ben Coombs John Huber Byron O Moore Frank Adair Eugene Thornton Elza Rogers and Dr. Beck, retired to a slumber party hosted by Misses Woods Campbell Coons and others.
A Lebanon gathering traveled by auto to the Pinnell residence six miles south of town for a lawn picnic Wednesday evening. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Mark Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Agury Finch, Mr. and Mrs. S. N. Gagan, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Morris, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Heath, Dr. and Mrs. J. B. Ball, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Winn, Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Adair, Mr. and Mrs. Watt Fogle, and Henry Moore.
Clarence DeMotte of Lebanon and Opal Biddle of Lebanon were married in Danville on Tuesday at two o'clock in the afternoon. The bride is Jessie Biddle’s sister and the groom is in charge of the bonding car on the interurban. They plan to reside on South East street and will be at home after August 15.
A good roads meeting in the surveyor's office Wednesday night appointed Ben Simmons J R Godenhour and Dave Clark to confer with the commissioner at the Monday session. A follow up meeting Monday night will finalize the recommendations under consideration.
Mrs Stanley Garner of West Royal street entertained the Y M club yesterday afternoon. Mrs Robert Helwig of Williamaport was a guest. The hostess served a two course luncheon.
L. MN Newcomber, 75, of Lamong died Tuesday morning at 6 after injuries from a fall from a milk back three months earlier. He formerly served as Hamilton County sheriff. He leaves a widow, two sons and three daughters. Burial will be at Crownland cemetery in Noblesville.
Firefighters rushed to the Waterworks power house to extinguish a brush pile fire threatening a $1200 motor stored in a small shed. The department arrived in time to prevent extensive damage to the plant equipment.
Ed Campbell living two miles east of Clarksville lost his two story farm house last night in a blaze. The dwelling was occupied by Jesse Smith who could not save any household goods.
The Lebanon Hardware Company became the first Studebaker dealer in the state with a shipment of 1916 model automobiles. The Tocal firm received a car load and has already sold two machines.
