CERNAUTI Romania September 19 Polish armies badly battered continue to resist German forces after government fled the country. Front reports place units in Warsaw area the Bug River north of Pinsk and Bialystok region and along the San River west of Lwow. As leaders crossed the border refugees into Poland’s safety in Romania total about 100000.

In Lubbock on September 19 Viax Baer knocked out Willie Babes Ritchie in the second round, after an early exchange. Baer dominated, landing eye shots twice and finishing the bout in one minute and ten seconds of the round.
Annie Henson of Oak Grove, 70, recalls she could climb a tree at age 10. She climbed a tree while picking wild plums in a pasture when a bull charged, seeking safety above in the branches.
London September 19 Exchange Telegraph reports the 44,600 ton Furness Line ship Avue more has been sunk by a submarine. The agency says there are left survivors numbering 11.

Charles M Schwab, 77, longtime leader in the steel industry who aided U.S. war effort by making slips available, died in his Park Avenue apartment after a period of declining health. He had just returned from Europe and had crossed the Atlantic many times. His death followed a coronary thrombosis. Funeral services were planned at St Patrick's Cathedral.
