Weather hints of early fall linger as the Third Sunday Singing grows near at Monkstown. Vin Wells invites all to attend or listen, and locals report rain easing drought with Al Corley noting two inches plus rain at his place north of town.
The Senate voted to keep total U S troop strength at current levels and to limit future involvement in Laos and Thailand to supplies and equipment, not personnel. The amendments, approved with Pentagon backing, were attached to a defense procurement bill with a tentative full-vote date later.
A vacant house owned by James Starkey was destroyed by fire early Wednesday on FM 27 south of the State Park entrance. Firefighters say origin undetermined. A nearby hay barn was undamaged. the property was the old Doug Steger place and slated for demolition.
Investigating officers estimated $150 in damage after a two car collision at Center Street and Sam Rayburn Drive. Assistant Chief Jay Duckworth and Officer Tom Haggard identified drivers as John Henry Nichols of Ivanhoe and Warren G. Square of Sherman. Square traveled west on Sam Rayburn Drive while Nichols headed south on Center Street at the time of impact.
Six of eight U S Army Special Forces members are to be court martialed over the alleged murder of a Vietnamese national in the Nha Trang area last June. Col Robert Rheault and six others are charged with murder and conspiracy. two more are held in abeyance. The case has drawn international attention and secrecy.
Ballots for the September 25 school bond election were received at the county tax office this morning. Absentee voters unable to go to the polls or out of town on September 25 may vote at the tax office in the 500 block of North Main. Absentee voting ends Monday.
The U S Weather Bureau forecasts more showers tonight for Bonham with a cool night and a warmer Friday. The morning low reached 62 degrees under clear skies as clouds moved in and limited the day’s high.
Three 17-year-old students were indicted on a second degree lynching charge after a group of six beat biology teacher C H Dowdy for not removing hats and buttoning shirts in class. Dowdy escaped serious injury as school officials support the charge to deter further violence.
Four Texas women, wives of pilots shot down over the North, met Hanoi officials in Paris and were told the fate of their missing husbands would be investigated but that no immediate answer would be given. They expressed deep disappointment at not receiving clear results or assurances.
Idaho Senator Len B. Jordan, 70, was punched by a young robber in his apartment building elevator. The attacker struck with a blackjack as they fought in the hallway before a nearby senator intervened. Jordan sustained a goose egg sized head wound and pressed on to a prayer breakfast.
President Nixon asks 126 UN nations to apply pressure for serious Paris talks to end the Vietnam War. He calls for de escalation of the air war, troop withdrawals, and broad international support including on Middle East, arms control with the Soviet Union, and a new earth resource satellite program. He warns peace requires binding commitments and negotiations with Communist China when open, while stressing South Vietnam's right to self determination.
Five inches of rain fell in two hours in western Lubbock Texas flooding 24 blocks to depths up to four or five feet. Civil defense opened an emergency center as residents saved belongings and watered streets. Lightning struck a home causing about $1000 in damage while drizzle continued into dawn and cooler temperatures followed.
David Glen Jones 18 of Ector died in a fall in a deep sewer trench when walls caved in near Sherman on Sept 17 1969. Another worker was injured. Jones born June 4 1951 in Commerce was Baptist and survived by parents five brothers a sister and extended family. Funeral arrangements pending.
