The New Hope Methodist pie supper raised 202.50 for the church building fund. An Aug 15 1900s issue of The Fannin County Favorite was found by County Judge Choice Moore. The paper featured Bonham Cotton Mills, the DB&NO railroad, local leaders, and Jubilee parade attendance estimated at 30 000 with 20 000 by 10 30 a m. The county Confederate reunion was set for Honey Grove August 21 22 with speakers Gen Cabell Col W T Lanham and Capt W L Clark.
Volunteer firemen were called to a grass fire east of a Washington Negro school Thursday afternoon. The smoke from the blaze rising above the building triggered the alarm as firefighters battled tall grass and heavy smoke.
Comedian Red Skelton remains at St John’s Hospital in Santa Monica as doctors report extreme physical fatigue after a personal tour of Japan. A release is expected Monday.
In Hurston Scotland 45 men trapped by a Petrie explosion in a mile deep coal mine faced no hope of survival. A National Coal Board spokesman said there is no hope as flames and smoke roared through mine corridors. Six men were saved and one found dead while 52 were trapped due to ventilating fan wires短. Rescue efforts were hampered by falls of coal and rock as firefighters battled flames for hours. Families waited at the pithead as the day shift of 108 escaped after the ventilation accident.
Phillip Dycus, 15, told police he shot his mother and father in August and dumped their bodies in a shed after seeing them dead, then calmly led officers to the scene. His brother Wayne and landlord W. G. Thompson found the bodies in an exclusive residential area. An officer called the youth the most cold blooded kid he ever saw.
Three newly assigned Negro students reported for classes at Central High School while a planned white student walkout fizzled. Newsmen observed a few students leaving after the bell and police noted no large crowds as James Henderson Jefferson Thomas and two Negro girls entered or left the building under tense early conditions.
Sept 30 marks the deadline for voters in Fannin County to cast ballots in the wool and lamb market development referendum. Ballots were mailed to known wool and lamb producers and must be postmarked by Sept 30 or delivered in person to the ASC office. The vote decides approving a new agreement between the secretary of agriculture and the American Sheep Producers Association for advertising and sales promotion of lambs and wool.
Gen Gilbert J Pritchard is being removed as commander of U S troops at Keflavik NATO base after incidents tied to a U S Iceland pact. The transfer follows an Iceland led dispute settlement and involves higher defense council officials while denying personal fault. An Air Force sentry threatened to shoot four civilians including German pilots amid restricted area orders.
Thirty six community committeemen and 24 alternates were elected by farmers of Fannin county to run the farm program locally. The family of Richard Swanson, a 21 year old USC student who choked while at a fraternity initiation, calls for a full inquiry. Dentist Dr Arthur Swanson claims fraternity members could have saved him if they cooperated with ambulance crews. Police and the DA await complete reports before possible charges. The Kappa Sigma chapter was banned locally and expelled nationwide.
Temperatures in the Bunham area show little change through Saturday with partly cloudy skies. Daily highs near 60 and overnight lows in the low 60s accompany a stalled cool front that had been set to enter North Texas.
NASA announced Vanguard III was launched from Cape Canaveral at 1 20 a m edt to join seven US and one Soviet satellite in orbit. The 50 pound satellite studies Earth's magnetic field and space environment as it completes a 130 minute orbit at 33 degrees inclination.
Premier Nikita Khrushchev laid a wreath at Franklin D. Roosevelt's grave in Hyde Park under light rain. Eleanor Roosevelt escorted the leaders to the grave site where a wreath with red banners was placed. The group then toured the Roosevelt family home and met Treasury Secretary Morgenthau, with Khrushchev uttering two English words, Ah finance.
Khrushchev urges four year dismantling of all armed forces with police for internal control and a non nuclear zone in central Europe. He backs a new pact tying NATO members to a Communist world order while warning of intensified Cold War brinkmanship.
AFL CIO leaders met in a private session in San Francisco to address the steel strike as the first major issue facing the convention. George Meany and other officials urged delegates that big business seeks to destroy the labor movement, with David J. McDonald calling industry insincere and blocking settlements.
A big color film of Premier Nikita Khrushchev's U S visit is being produced by the Central Studio of Documentary Films. Tass reports opening shots at Vnukovo Airport with Khrushchev's departure and four cameramen documenting the trip.
A nearly frozen hummingbird found in North Woodstock Vermont arrived in Miami aboard a Northeast airliner in a cardboard carton. Mrs Eugenia M Mooney shipped the bird as a special passenger for four dollars to keep it warm for the winter and it was turned over to the Audubon Society. The bird reached Miami around 4 am as a warm day welcomed it with a forecast high of 67.
