Students return to classes at Edgar A Poe elementary after a bombing that killed six and injured nineteen. Police searched for other explosives and secured entrances as flagps were lowered. The suspect Paul Orgeron died by suicide after the blast.
Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev told the National Press Club that all nations will gain from abolishing the cold war and that the USSR intends good relations with the United States and its allies. He praised U.S. hospitality and cited meetings with U.S. leaders as a path to broader harmony.
Jim Henry Blackburn pleaded guilty in county court to driving while intoxicated. Judge Choice Moore fined 100 dollars plus costs, sentenced him to three days in jail, and suspended his driver's license for six months.

A six member county court jury found W R Don Campbell guilty of obscene and indecent exhibition of person after a 17 minute verdict. He was fined 100 dollars plus costs. A motion for a new trial was filed by defense attorney Don Gladden of Fort Worth. The trial featured testimony from five state witnesses sighting the Cedar Valley Health Resort camp and the nude presence of Campbell and others.
School board authorized C H Dillehay to obtain prices for ditch removal north of the vocational building using a concrete box drainage or tile piping and to cover and grade the area. He was also authorized to seek bids on two surplus 1951 buses after acquiring two new ones.

A five story Barletta apartment housing 24 families with 106 people collapsed without warning. 16 bodies recovered and 13 injured with about 80 missing. Most dead showed signs of asphyxia. Rescue teams, police, and volunteers worked amid rubble as an army cordon protected the hospital area.
The Little Rock School Board opened integrated Central High School to three more Negro students bringing total enrollment to five. The three, a boy and two girls, will attend their first classes Friday after requesting transfers from Horace Mann Negro High under Arkansas pupil placement laws.
