The Daughters of the American Revolution announce National Constitution Week, Sept 17 23, urging civic groups and schools to stress constitution defense. Also noted is the 1969 Texas Prison Rodeo starting Oct 3 with performances over three Sundays featuring Wanda Jackson and Merle Haggard as guest stars.
The Times Mirror proposes to acquire the Dallas Times Herald in a 9 million dollar stock deal creating a combined publishing group. The merger awaits FCC approval and favorable ruling, with Dallas and Los Angeles operations to run autonomously under current management.
The article recounts the death of 17 year old Christopher Edgar serving in the British Army in Ulster. It describes the creation of an eight foot peace wall along Dover Street separating Catholic and Protestant neighbors including Annie Keown a 79 year old widow who refused to live beside the wall.

Sherman Texas United Press International reports investigators failed to connect found clothing items to seven year old Donna Marie Golish’s abduction and slaying. Sheriff Blanton says no definite leads and the body was not where killed. FBI paint analysis of shirt fragments and paint chips were sent for testing.
District Judge Henry Braswell announced that all Tuesday cases in the Sixth District court in Bunham have been settled or discontinued. Jurors summoned for Tuesday morning may ignore the summons as no jury will be needed and those summoned are asked not to report.
Arab guerrillas attacked an Israeli military settlement with bazookas and automatic rifles, backed by a mortar barrage from Syria. One Israeli civilian and one guerrilla were killed in the brief clash. An Egyptian spokesman said forces foiled an Israeli air raid on Gulf of Suez positions. Israel reported air strikes along the gulf south of Suez City for about 50 minutes.

The Manhattan became the first commercial ship to complete the Northwest Passage voyage sponsored by Humble Oil. It arrived at Sachs Harbour Canada at midnight after taking on mail supplies and passengers, then pressed toward Alaska with plans to reach Batter. The 1,002-foot ship marked a five year dream of a feasible top-of-the-world trade route.
UPI reports the U.S. Military Command confirms a North Vietnamese regular unit operated in the IV Corps area. An 18B Regiment participation in a seven hour assault near Tri Ton killed 83 defenders and left four U.S. dead with 19 wounded. The clash followed a mortar rocket attack as South Vietnamese forces, supported by helicopters and artillery, repelled the attack.
Mrs Lois Meade 71 prominent Bonham figure found dead at 915 Chestnut street after months of heart illness. Funeral plans pending Wise Funeral Home with daughter Mrs Richard Quigg en route from Pueblo Colorado. She served as elder at First Presbyterian and led Presbyterian Women. Survived by sister Mrs H A Buron and four grandchildren.
A Dallas Negro woman, Mrs. Georgia Cook, 16, died when her car overturned several times on Highway 34 two miles west of Ladonia around 2 15 this Monday morning. Her 2 year old son was mildly injured. The body was taken to Ladonia and to Wolfe City funeral home. Mil ford and Highway Patrolman Rod Ridley investigated.
Two six man teams descend 543 feet into Manning ton No. 9 mine as officials begin months of work to recover the 78 entombed coal miners. Crews tested elevator equipment and pumped 13 feet of water while ventilating the shaft and checking conditions after explosions in November.
The National Education Association reports that about eighty percent of estimated man-days lost to teacher strikes since 1940 occurred in the 1967-68 school year. NEA calls 134 strikes in 1967-65 a veritable explosion.
Scattered showers moved from Del Rio into Central Texas with a cool front to bring rain to West Texas. Widely scattered thundershowers were forecast to linger in Central Texas and develop in East and West Texas with mild temperatures. Early readings ranged from the 60s to near 80 in Galveston.
