Reports from Poland say Polish troops and heavy artillery defend Lwow against German motorized columns pushing from the east. The city, a key southern industrial center, faced initial breaches but Polish resistance kept fortifications intact, with dispatches suggesting looming isolation of Lwow by German forces.
Amid rising demand for ranch products in Texas markets, wool and mohair prices surged to new highs while lambs and calves commanded stronger returns. Britain urged faster air assistance to Poland as German forces tightened around Warsaw, with France and Britain engaging on multiple fronts and naval actions shaping the blockade.
H. F. McElroy, city manager of Kansas City for 13 years and second to the Pendergast Democratic machine, died at age 74. He resigned soon after Pendergast was indicted last April, ending a long tenure in Missouri political life.
Secretary Wallace announced a marketing quota to limit unrestricted sale of the 1940 cotton crop to about 12 million bales. The quota and penalties depend on a two thirds yes vote in a December 9 referendum. Farmers within allotments may market their crop without penalty. violators face a three cent per pound charge on excess cotton.
The thirteenth annual Fannin County Pair opens with special days for each town. Ridgeway youth Charles Giles, seventeen, picked 791 pounds of cotton for J Evans at Ridgeway on Monday at Sulphur Springs. His younger brothers Bud and Junior gathered 528 pounds and a smaller share, respectively, as the family continued harvest efforts in the area.
