J H W Burket of the Texas Department of Agriculture announced prizes totaling 35 for native pecan varieties. Entries may be seedlings or trees showing superiority, with six cash prizes to be awarded. Winners must allow testing and grant rights for further propagation while protecting the owners’ rights. The program aims to improve commercial pecan stock and seedling quality.
Associated Press reports Belize natives move upriver in dugouts and skiffs seeking sustenance after a recent hurricane. They fear disease from floodwater and plan to rely on jungle fruits and local food sources as they travel along undamaged river areas.
In East Texas the day brings a high around 94 with low near 10 after midnight. Night and Tuesday show mostly cloudy skies with possible showers in the Panhandle and west Texas partial cloudiness across most areas.
United States wire service report from Ufa says the aircraft carrying Joseph Lebrix and Rene Mesmin was blown apart in midair by engine explosion. Mesmin, the pilot, tried to escape but his parachute tangled, while Lebrix was unable to free himself. Mayr oul Doret survived unhurt.
A report from San Antonio states Sergeant Benjemin Aselred of the 2th Observation Squadron, San Antonio, Wis, was killed when his automobile overturned on the highway near Port Lavaca during a night accident. Sergeant D. L Brian was unhurt.
Honey Grove prepares for its fair opening with exhibits in Gow stables and the James building poultry display. Sam Rayburn will speak on Bonham Night and the Courthouse quartet performs, with the Bonham Municipal Band providing music. A Cotton Queen pageant sponsored by Honey Grove High School crowns a pretty girl by popular vote.
The Texas House opened debate on the Olsen bill to limit cotton to one fourth of cultivated acreage for the next two years. Amendments proposed set the limit at one fourth or one half, with Long’s no cotton plan as a potential substitute. Agriculture Commissioner McDonald supports one fourth. Rep Phil Sanders urged Thursday adjournment. Action postponed to Tuesday as the Senate asked Governor Sterling to propose salaries reductions for state employees.
