Residents recall Friday sighting as Jim Russell reports a mother possum with about six youngsters riding on her back crossing his yard. Mrs Russell notes it's the first such sight for them, while Jimmie Buford blames heavy dove hunting and its air blasts for triggering rain by collapsing clouds.
Dennis Holman voices frustration at his siblings leaving for college and says they took hats deodorant soup and other items, leaving him with nothing on hand and needing to buy his own supplies.
Mack Shannon recalls Wyatt McMurry doubting a tale about a well at Batley that froze, saying he never heard of it. The exchange occurs as Mack plans a method of revenge and notes tonight’s Quarterback Club meeting at 8 pm in the high school cafeteria.
Two teenage boys yankey three young Wagner children from a burning auto on a laundry parking lot saving them from potential fatal burns. Hershel Jones and Larry Minor spotted the car in flames and alerted Mrs. Wagner as the vehicle burned.
UPI reports three regiments at 2,900 troops attacked Con Thien near the DMZ but US Marines held ground with about 800 men. American losses were heavy with 34 killed and 185 wounded, while enemy bodies counted at 350 plus 900 more carried away. Cam Pha port was hit by 7th Fleet jets as planes bombed the area.
Wayne Cranfill learned Monday morning of the death of his brother Carl E Cranfill 27 in a pickup truck crash near Chickasha Oklahoma. The driver survived and the body rests at Lackey Funeral Home Snyder. Funeral plans set for Indiahoma with details scarce. Survivors include parents Mr and Mrs Fal Cranfill Indiahoma another brother J C Cranandt Aurora Nebraska and three sisters Mrs Virgil Elhoutt San Francisco California Mrs Richard Crossland Clarendon Hall West Virginia and Mrs David Fritz Jr Mountain View Oklahoma.
Bonham schools report 1967-68 opening day enrollment up by 75 from 1966-67. Opening day total was 1,942 this year versus 1,867 last year. By school: Bailey Inglish 477, J W Evans 514, J H Rather 337, and Senior High 614. Additional students expected later in the week.
No injuries reported in two city wrecks over the weekend. Officers estimated total damage at $410. Drivers identified as John Kelly Anderson of Bonham and Minnie Jackson Curtis of Denison collided at 9th and Center. A separate rear collision damaged Jewell Moore’s parked car at 519 East 9th.
Hurricane Beulah sla shed across the Barahona Peninsula in the Dominican Republic with 125 mph winds and moved toward Haiti and Jamaica. Forecasters warned of flash floods and deadly tides along Haiti's coast while Cuba and Guantanamo Bay switched to emergency alerts as Beulah gained speed.
In East St Louis a youth was killed by a police officer during a large disturbance on the south side near where a black power protest occurred. A policeman was stabbed, fires started with firebombs, windows broken, and looting reported as police pursued suspects. Roosevelt Young, 18, fled during arrest and was shot. The incident followed an earlier speech by a black power advocate.
In New York City the nation's largest school system faced opening day without many teachers as 1.1 million students arrived. Administrators and volunteer mothers kept schools open while the United Federation of Teachers pressed for a $125 million, two year contract with wage gains averaging 1700 per teacher.
Fannin county civic clubs churches and individuals join American Red Cross to fill gift bags for Vietnam servicemen. Chairman Leemiy Sewell urges participation with a goal of 75 bags filled by October 5. Bags include cards and small items. gifts must be new and addressed.
Clear to partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures are forecast for the Bonham area through Tuesday. The North Texas five day outlook calls for temperatures two to seven degrees below normal with showers bringing a half to three quarters of an inch by week’s end. Bonham recorded a high of 7 and a low of 63 this morning. Tuesday temperatures are expected to range from the upper 50s to near 70.
Bonham city commission will open bids for the sale of the old lake property as a top item on the agenda. City Manager Dan Mize said several parties expressed interest and the city expects multiple bids. The commission reserves the right to reject any and all bids.
Demonstrators showered leaflets from public galleries on the Senate's first day back from Labor Day recess. The pamphlets urged withdrawal of U.S. troops from Vietnam, end to the draft, and a call to address civil rights. Capitol police detained five protesters led by Keith Lampe, a Queens College teacher, and the Senate resumed proceedings after order was restored.
Indian and Chinese troops clashed at Nathula Pass high in the Himalayas using artillery mortars and automatic weapons. Casualties were reported on both sides as the border hostilities flared near Gangtok and Gangtokwang.
Lester Howard Kueckelhan 56 of Bonham Star Route died Sunday night in a Bonham hospital after an illness. Funeral services set for 2 pm Tuesday at Wise Funeral Chapel with burial in Willow Wild cemetery. Survivors include his widow Nely, son Hayes, two daughters, a brother, two sisters, and five grandchildren.
L B Morris was elected Bois d Arc district chairman at a Saturday gathering at Bunnam State Park. The city judge and former longtime coach was installed by Bob Cantrell and also serves as city judge and First Baptist Church official board chair. The meeting featured awards, film narrations, and planning notices for upcoming events including a fall camporee and a commissioners conference.
