Paris dispatch reports French troops repulsed violent German counterattacks along the Maginot West wall frontier. Hand to hand combat occurred in open fields near the Sterck Saarburg road as Germans were driven back at bayonet point.
Leonard boosters arrive by auto caravan with their school band for a Bonham court house lawn show at 8 20 pm to promote the Leonard Community fair September 19 to 23. The tour also stops at Celeste Wolfe City Bailey Randolph Trenton Whitewright Desert and Blue Ridge with times listed for each stop.
Hon. Sam Rayburn says President Roosevelt will convene a special session of Congress on October 2. He notes the president telephoned him but has not yet sealed the exact date.
The Ministry of Information in London reports four more British ships sunk by German submarines, joining the three sunk last Sunday. The vessels named are Regent Tiger, Goodwin, Rio Claro, and Magdaour. crew of the Regent Tiger previously reported picked up by a Belgian ship.
Austin. September 11. Chairman Lon A Smith of the Texas Railroad Commission said he would approve an oil proration order by Commissioner Jerry Sadler. It raises East Texas production to 685000 barrels daily while keeping other Texas fields at current levels. The order will be in effect for September and October, increasing total Texas output by about 100000 barrels per day. It continues Saturday and Sunday shutdowns and adds a two day East Texas shutdown for tests under a new proration formula.
London reported that New Zealand will be the first British dominion to dispatch an expeditionary force to Europe. An official said the first unit would comprise 16,000 men.
War expands to North America as Canada declares war on Germany under King George VI. United States extends neutrality act provisions. Canada mobilizes 18 to 41 volunteers for overseas service while enormous relief effort unfolds to feed Britain. German siege tightens around Warsaw as French motorized forces invade German soil near the Siegfried Line.
Plans for the Fannin County Fair progress with hopes for the largest event in association history. Beef cattle and dairy exhibits grow, hogs and poultry draw strong entries. Roy Gray’s midway show and a parade featuring mainly high school bands are set, with Tuesday’s Children’s Day expected to draw a record crowd.
In Austin on September 11 Governor W Lee O Daniel urged delaying political activity during wartime. He urged full citizen cooperation to keep the nation out of the foreign war and criticized partisan talk that could inflame neighbors amid a diverse Texas population.
London dispatch says Danish newspaper Berlinske Aftenavis cites a Swedish steamer sighting a German warship at a distance, then witnesses report its explosion in the northwest corner of the mine field off Trelleborg.
Washington officials said the wartime commodity boom wiped out a potential $119 million federal loss on surplus crops and loaned commodities. Higher prices raised collateral value across cotton, corn, wheat, tobacco, wool and dried prunes, tempering loan risks as inventories soared.
Plans for a sixth year of Fannin County's cooperative house at A and M College are set for fall term. Thirty two boys will occupy the house with Grant Clutter as matron, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and directed by W J Young and Oleta Yarbrough. The program offers room and board at a minimum of 15 a month, saving about two percent.
Germany claims the war in Poland remains strong while admitting French troops are on German soil in the west. British and French reports say a German counter-attack failed to halt Allied advances along the Siegfried line. Polish legions form in France as Paris, London, Berlin, and Moscow relay conflicting briefings on battles, mobilization, and strategic moves as war widens and spars over.
Berlin reported the first great battle of the Polish war approaching a decisive point in the Warsaw Radom sector along a broad 250 mile front. Defenders between the Vistula and Bug rivers and Polish forces near Radom faced intense fighting as German forces captured large numbers of troops and war stores. The communique also said an oval landing party moved against the Baltic port of Gdynia while Saarbruecken air drop evacuated on the French front.
Reported from Basel and Paris on Sunday night and Monday morning describe German Siegfried Line units launching renewed night raids against French positions in the Saarland. French forces counterattacked along the right bank of the Saar and near Luxembourg as part of a larger offensive toward the Siegfried Line.
