United Press International reports 450 traffic deaths predicted during the 78 hour Labor Day weekend as millions hit the roads. Authorities mobilize police, National Guardsmen, and air support to manage expected jams and crashes.
Dallas News favors Bonham to win while Times Herald backs Kaufman as the winner in a late night domino contest at Nunnelee. A hardware store player on Main street reportedly played all night and still didn’t win. The team, with many players, fills three to four tables on Mondays and Thursdays for entertainment.
Bonham merchants expect a big back to school surge starting Tuesday as students begin purchasing supplies such as paper pens and ink for the new term. Some shoppers have already stocked up, with the peak period anticipated next week.
Labor Day will be a holiday for Bonham firms as the Chamber of Commerce holiday committee adopts the day. Only sheriffs department city police and fire department staff are expected to work. Highway Patrol and other officers will monitor highways to prevent accidents and reduce the traffic toll.
The forecast calls for widely scattered showers and continued warm through Saturday. Bonham had .37 inch of rain Thursday with a few drops Friday morning. Saturday morning low near 68 and high around 86. A turbulent Thursday brought a tornado near Millsap and strong storms across the state. North Central Texas remains partly cloudy with scattered showers tonight and Saturday.
New York officials launched a no coddling campaign against teen gang violence. Mayor Wagner authorized a police force increase of 1 080 and Kennedy ordered immediate job applications. Governor Rockefeller planned a joint city state civic leaders meeting to map broader juvenile crime actions.
The first powered X15 flight was canceled after technical difficulties forced test pilot Scott Crossfield to halt the attempt. The plane, carried aloft by a B52 mothership, had been scheduled for a 15 minute air launch over the Mojave Desert from 7:23 a.m. The No 2 ship had not flown free before this test, while No 1 had conducted a guide test.
Two vehicles collided on U S 82 at Windom injuring no one seriously. James Thomas Lewis of Amarillo and Billy Cline Turner of Suriname were named as drivers. Mrs Lewis suffered bruises and shock but no hospitalization. Turner’s car left the highway and struck a yard.
The Fannin County Artificial Breeders' Association will continue as an association through December and then plan for 1960. President A. T. Chaney Jr said non-members may use the semen services at a higher price, and a training school for members and others could be held if interest exists. The service is available to beef cattle producers and dairy men.
The Caney Creek watershed flood control project gains approval from local agricultural committees and a telegram from Rayburn and Johnson and Yarborough to W T Hull. Project cost estimated at 1 545 015 with federal share 1 066 26 and local funds or in kind contributions to cover 98 329 for maintenance and care of retention dams over years. Delegations from flood control districts will appear before the commissioners court on September 14 seeking court to assume maintenance. The retention dams aim to hold excess flood waters for orderly release after floods, with minimal upkeep if proper conservation practices are followed.
Washington UPI report shows Southern Democrats opposing Paul Butler for reviving the 1956 loyalty rule at the Democratic convention. Southern leaders warn of party division and potential new allocation changes that could reduce bonus delegates for Dixie states.
The House approved a compromise labor reform bill ending a two year fight. Democrats and Republicans praised the agreement as it moved to President Eisenhower for signature.

A radio report claimed a fishing boat collided with a submarine, but a Coast Guard commander later doubted the report and offered no confirmation of the incident.
Swift & Co. faces a strike by Amalgamated Meat Cutters and United Packinghouse Workers affecting 16,000 workers in 35 cities. Wilson & Co. avert a walkout by keeping expired contract in effect 24 more hours as bargaining continues. Union charges say wage cuts and reduced benefits are demanded. company counter that offers are equal or better than other packers.
John Norwood, a 29 year old former Bonham resident and Sherman lumber yard manager, was transferred to Parkland hospital in Dallas for polio after tests indicated positive. His family noted signs of a left arm impact and he had not had Salk vaccine shots. His mother and brother accompanied him. this follows a prior Norwood family polio case last October.
Charles Robert Parkhill 15, son of Mr and Mrs W E Parkhill, was critically injured Friday morning when thrown from a flatbed truck on the old Ivanhoe road four miles north of Bonham. He sustained basal skull fractures and was hospitalized at M&S. The truck, driven by Richard Allen Rencher 17, carried Robert Elden Rencher 15 and Clyde Eugene Barrow 16 as other passengers.
Charles Greenwood 41 of Paris Texas was critically burned and injured by a roof blast at Wilder's Restaurant. He is among eight hurt as the bomb exploded above the downtown dining spot causing severe burns and multiple fractures.
The House prepared to end the labor reform clash by sending a compromise bill to President Eisenhower. The Senate approved the measure 95 to 2, and Eisenhower was expected to sign. The package retains key tougher provisions on secondary boycotts organizational picketing and no mans land jurisdiction, aligning with the House version. Rep. Graham Barden said it would pass overwhelmingly.
An explosion and fire after a gasoline tank truck crashed into a small panel truck in Fort Worth killed the gas truck driver and left two others injured. Firefighters fought the blaze over an hour before recovering the charred driver. injuries included Crowley volunteer firefighter John Wilson and Tony McGee, 18, of Fort Worth, who was driving the panel truck.
The Warren County Educational Foundation will continue private segregated classes for about 600 white students in Front Royal Virginia this fall as the county moves toward integration. A private school opens next Tuesday while 400 white students may join 18 Negroes in integrated classes at the county’s white public high school. The foundation reports 100000 of the required 160000 dollars has been pledged.
