The First Christian church plans a watermelon supper this Saturday in the basement with Paula Leslie as committee chair. Attendees may eat all they want for 50 cents, and serving starts about 5 30 p m.
Amid Labor Day weekend, Bonham Golf Club hosts a full day of member activities with golf and non golf options. Motorists are advised to drive carefully and allow ample room to other drivers. Stay at home or join the event for a relaxed, social holiday.
Two non serious crashes occurred Friday in Bonham. Total damage estimated at 1280 dollars. Vehicles collided near Cedar and 7th streets, then careened into the home of G L Holman uprooting a tree. Drivers Leese Be Jones and Richard Allen Tay Jar identified. A separate wreck at Wallas Samy Rayburn Drive involved Gary Lawrence Cheatham of Windom and Allen Quinn May of Bonham with both cars traveling east.
Labor Day observance closes state county city offices and most businesses. The Daily Favorite will publish by noon Monday to allow staff a longer day off.
Red River Cotton Mills and Lone Star Textiles Inc. deny reports of a shutdown. Russell Johnson, Lone Star vice president, says plans include early improvements and automated systems to boost production. He notes new appointments at the mill and urges community support as over 300 employees and local stakeholders remain invested.
Bonham first grade students will register for the 1967 68 term on Wednesday Sept 6 at 9 00 am in the Bailey Inglish Cafetorium. Principal Manhart explains health and non graded programs to parents and students, with questions after the assembly. Parents should bring health forms and birth certificates, and a 75 cent semester fee may be paid then. Second and third graders will report Sept 11 for the start of the year.
Yemeni President Abdullah Sallal protested a regional peace plan during broadcasts from Sanaa and in Cairo he clashed with Nasser over an accord seen as an external interference. The plan, tied to the Arab summit decisions, proposes a protectorate over Yemen and halting Egyptian support and Saudi funding for royalist guerrillas. Sallal rejects the neutral protectorate and vows resistance despite regional moves to end an air embargo.
Ronald Crow a 15 year old son of Mrs Sarah Crow was shot in the left shoulder Saturday afternoon while cleaning a .22 calibre rifle at his mothers home Crow and two younger siblings were taken to Allen Memorial hospital by police car and officials indicated the wound did not appear serious City officers Duckworth Hammalton and Harper were at the scene
Fort Worth man S. J Bradley was killed Friday night four miles east of Jean Texas after his car left Texas 199 and plunged into a creek. Bradley his wife and two sons stopped along the highway when the vehicle began to roll and overturned pinning him beneath the wreckage.
Skies are expected to stay mostly candy with mild temperatures in the Bonham area through Sunday. The Sunday high is forecast near the misbkb0s with a Sunday morning low around 70. Bonham recently saw a Friday in the low 80s and a Saturday morning low near 68. No rain is mentioned locally, though North Central Texas may see scattered showers.
Voters across South Vietnam risked violence to elect a president and 60 member senate as Viet Cong terror campaigns target polling places and buses. Gen. Thieu appeared likely to win with 75 to 80 percent turnout expected, while Thieu and Ky hosted U.S. observers and discussed a meaningful, honest vote with President Johnson’s delegation.
Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield urged hope for a new bombing pause after South Vietnam elections. Senator Henry Jackson warned a pause could hinder the U.S. military effort, saying any halt should not be based on hope others will talk. Jackson favored continued bombing to cut supply lines, possibly ending the war in 18 months.
Grade four through eight students entering the Benham system for the first time will pre register Wednesday at I W Evans cafeteria at 9 a m. Ray Taylor and Bob Williams urge all eligible students to register to ensure a smooth Sept 1 opening. Returning Benham students are already registered. First graders pre register at Bailey English.
Bonham firemen answered two grass fire alarms on Friday afternoon. Lonnie Henegar reported Ravenna area residents joined the effort with hoses and a plow to create a fire lane. Firefighters also responded to a second grass fire near Nuit Cydia at the 3700 block.
Reports from Canton say heavy fighting between Red Guard factions continues as troops sent from Beijing clash with rebel forces at the airport. Wall posters warn of anti-Maoists seeking a bloodbath and the rebels advancing on Canton by land and water in a rural-to-city strategy.
