In Beirut Lebanon rebels fired on a U S Marine guard outside Ambassador James McChillochs residence killing little or no damage. The attack occurred the first night of firing in Beirut in over a week and was accompanied by three explosions and bursts of machine gun fire. Marines did not return fire and sought cover inside a Patton tank and behind a wall. The ambassador reportedly slept through the incident.

President Eisenhower signed a 400 page act reforming federal excise taxes to cut admissions tax and provide broader relief.
