Fighting erupts thirty miles from Shanghai with Kiangsu and Chakiang forces. Kiangsu troops, about 40,000 strong, advance under air cover toward Shanghai as Jap and French marines land for foreign settlement protection and American detachments stand by. Refugees flood the city as the front closes in.
United Press reports Patrick Mahon was hanged at noon on September 3 for the murder of his former sweetheart Emily Kaye. The body was found in a closet after a quarrel in his bungalow.

United Press reports a massive forest fire in the San Gabriel Canyon near Pasadena. More than 700 firefighters battled the blaze since Sunday, burning over 4000 acres of undergrowth in the watershed as the fire remained uncontrolled.
London Sept. 3 United Press reports Dario Resta, famous Italian auto race driver and holder of several records, was killed when his car overturned at Brooklands race. Resta was well known on the American track.

The body approved a resolution urging the resignation of Mrs J T Bloodworth as National committeewoman and praised Governor Neff and Whit Davidson for actions against mob violence. The convention adjourned sine die after a brief session and set a Houston meeting to fill a ticket vacancy created by W M Splawn's resignation.

Three Mexicans are under arrest in Meade Kansas after an attempted holdup of a Rock Island west bound passenger train. Two deputies Roy Lewis and L V Keeney were wounded in a pistol battle. The posse thwarted the mail car robbery involving about $250000.
