He told Democratic state chairmen he wants his campaign to stay out of receptions with wealthy donors and focus on factories, assembly lines, barber shops, and cattle yards. He noted recent appearances in Atlanta Washington and New York were fundraising for the party.
Texas Public Utility Commission begins statewide regulation of telephone rates with Southwestern Bell filing for a possible 20 percent general increase plus 20 cent pay phone and directory assistance charges. The move also extends regulatory authority to rural electric water and sewer rates with initial assessments due Sept 1, 1975.
A 50,000 gallon gasoline tank at a Gadsden service station exploded during a routine fire fight. The blast killed three volunteer firemen instantly and wounded 28 others as black smoke formed a 200 foot high mushroom cloud. Fireman Wallace Fleming described the moment as the end.
Ford denounces calls for a phased overseas troop withdrawal as voices of retreat. He says preparedness preserves peace and warns against dismantling defenses brick by brick. The remarks came at a National Guard Association convention amid Carter’s stance on withdrawal.

Other members include Judge Choice Moore, Charles Turbufus, Tony DeRose and Glen Porter. The group liaises between the chamber and TREC on Bonham interests.
