The Community Choir directed by Dick MacConnell gave a strong Sunday concert at First Christian church with patriotic and Thanksgiving anthems. Harold Clayton invites new singers for an Easter cantata while a park avenue squirrel paused traffic nearby.
In the late moments of a Sunday game between the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears a cotton tail rabbit captured the spotlight. Cameras focused on the rabbit as it darted and ran, drawing more attention than the action on the field. The wind was noted in Bonham and Oklahoma City with gusts up to 40 miles per hour in the latter, while Bookham leaves piled on the north sidewalk.
With Thanksgiving approaching on Thursday, peace officers urge extra care for motorists as weather may worsen and highway traffic increases. They advise starting early and obeying traffic laws, noting more officers will monitor road safety during the holiday period.
Two men, a Savoy resident and a Whitewright resident, are jailed in Sherman Grayson county on suspicion tied to arson in Fannin and Grayson counties. Deputy H R Van Zandt says no charges yet in Fannin. filed as soon as questions conducted. Investigations by Grayson and neighboring officers have been underway for weeks, with arrests made Monday in Sherman.
North Vietnam accused U.S. warplanes of violating Johnson's bombing halt with rockets and bombs on territory in Nghe An and Quang Binh. Hanoi said U.S. action followed protests to Paris talks and noted recent aerial losses including Phantom jets. Peking Radio floated renewed U.S. contacts in Warsaw as talks neared. The report emphasized Xiang tensions as Saigon prepared to attend resumed negotiations.
A large Bonham crowd welcomed Santa on his first 1968 pre Christmas visit as four high schools and many floats paraded. Mrs Russell Richardson’s Foxy float won first prize with a dog theme, Civitan second, Wishing Bluebird third, and FFA honorable mention. County officials attended and plans floated for a Santa return to meet children.
Eleven true bills of indictments were returned against four defendants Monday for the July term of Sixth district court. Burglary was charged in ten indictments and forgery in one. Jerry Fletcher Loftin and Jerry Tyler faced three burglary indictments each. Larry C. Haynes was charged with forgery and passing in one indictment. One man, not yet arrested, faced four burglary indictments.
Mrs. Joe Campbell chair of the Trowell and Error club announced Bonham lighting contest plans. Entries due December 18 with judges touring December 19 and lights on from 6 to 9 p m that night. The contest draws many Bonham homes and features prizes yet to be determined.
Maj. Harvey J. Steward of Lumena Texas and Capt. Edward Meschko of Owensboro Kentucky piloted an Air Force F100 strike against a canal side bunker and fortification complex in An Bien province. They were credited with destroying or damaging 22 fortifications five sampans and three bunkers and setting nine large fires during the raid. The operation occurred under 2000 foot cloud cover keeping the fighters low.
The U S Weather Bureau predicts rain and cooler conditions tonight through Wednesday for Bonham. Skies will be mostly cloudy with a chance of rain and a high in the mid 40s and a low around 40 on Wednesday.
Pete Terry reported to city police that an adding machine was stolen from his business on West Sam Rayburn Drive sometime Monday. No further details on the suspect or value were provided in the report.
The Daily Favorite will not publish on Thursday to allow news and mechanical staff to be with their families for Thanksgiving. The paper observes Christmas Day as the only other nonpublish day. Regular schedules resume Friday.
Fannin county schools will dismiss Wednesday afternoon for Thanksgiving holidays. County superintendent M. L. Brent announced classes will resume Monday Dec. 2. This marks the first holiday break of the term.
Premier Couve de Murville announced France will halt its atomic and hydrogen bomb tests in the Pacific as part of a 1.25 billion dollar budget cut to stabilize the franc. The move aims to curb the deficit and hold the franc at a 20 cent level, despite earlier expectations of devaluation. He urged French citizens to accept sacrifice and discipline to restore economic health.
U.S. Marines and South Vietnamese soldiers clash with Communist forces on two fronts inside the DMZ near Con Thien. A 15man patrol probes for guns after a base hit, while Marines request reinforcements, warplanes, and artillery as fighting extends into the night. Casualty reports are not yet released.
United Press International reports a cold front sweeping south into Texas with gusty winds and a sharp drop in temperatures. Lows at dawn ranged from the 30s in Dalhart to 43 in Amarillo, with 25 below in Colorado signaling a deepening chill.
