Pfe Lloyd Neal, son of Mrs. Maty Lou Cox, was seriously wounded in Germany on Oct 22 while serving with the combat engineers corps. He joined the service in February 1943. His twin brother Boyd Neal is recovering from wounds at McCloskey General Hospital Temple, received June 6 during the Normandy invasion.
Private Charles M. Roberts of Dodd City is awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for actions in Africa and Italy. The Purple Heart is awarded for a December 30 wound in Italy. Brig. Gen. Geo. C. Beach presented the honors at Brooke General Hospital where Roberts is a patient.
Miss Mabel Helen Duncanson a 57 year old recluse living in Upland California was burned to death when a fire gutted her claimed fireproof home. Neighbors described the reinforced concrete and steel house built in 1926 as completely fireproof and the blaze did not scorch nearby shrubs. She was the daughter of the late Dr EF DunecanSon a 1894 Populist presidential candidate.
More than 3,000 Allied bombers from Britain and Italy pounded German synthetic oil plants and transport lines from Brenner Pass to the North Sea. Western targets included Hamburg Harburg Gelsenkirchen Neu munster and Duisburg with 250 American bombers operating from Italy. Britain based losses were 22 planes and 12 heavies with 10 fighters. Smoke rose to 10 000 feet over Gelsenkirchen.
Two brothers Cpl Ernest C Young and Pvt Jessie B Young of Bonham Texas serve in the American Air Forces postal unit in the European Theater of Operations. They oversee quick mail delivery and ensure letters reach families back home. Cpl Young joined October 23 1942 and Pvt Young on November 1 1943 after farming.
The State Board of Education voted to buy four million dollars in war bonds from the permanent school fund as the bond drive opens December 1. The action aims to bolster wartime finance while supporting public schooling in Texas.
