The Methodist Youth Fellowship of the First United Methodist church will host a Thanksgiving dinner in Fellowship Hall. Serving runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds fund the MYF’s church work next year.
Texans prepare for a record turnout as presidential and statewide races heat up. Richard Nixon leads polls in Texas, with Sen. John Tower facing Barefoot Sanders for re election. Sissy Farenthold plans a Dallas fundraiser with beans and corn bread for Democratic support.
Fannin County voters face a large ballot on Tuesday with national state and county offices plus 14 Texas constitutional amendments. The 18 to 21 age group votes for the first time and more than 200 absentee ballots have been cast. Polls open 7 am to 7 pm in Bonham and South Bonham.
Bonham residents woke to rain on Monday with 52 inches recorded from 2 am to 7 am. The National Weather Service forecast clearer skies and cooler temperatures for Tuesday as voters head to the polls in the 1972 general election.
Hanoi radio accused Washington of violating the spirit of the peace accord by building up Saigon forces. The Viet Cong urged the United States to sign the draft treaty, while vowing to fight on if needed. Secretary Rogers said negotiations may resume soon but a settlement would take weeks.
President Nixon voiced confidence he will win re election saying voters face a clear cut choice of principles and men. He prepared a 30 minute television statement with film clips and planned a last campaign push as George McGovern toured California ahead of the election.
Senator George S McGovern wrapped up a coast to coast campaign with stops in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, urging voters to ignore polls predicting a Nixon landslide. He denounced government corruption and vetoes, labeled the Vietnam peace plan a political maneuver, and urged an end to the war as he pressed supporters in New York before heading home.
A high level U.S. civilian said Washington failed to brief the Defense Department on truce terms delaying details of any accord. The result was a last minute push to rush in new weapons to South Vietnam before a ceasefire. Officials say the move followed the terms banning new weapons and limiting replacements. The Pentagon announced it would monitor deliveries as planes and aircraft were ferried to Bien Hoa and Tan Son Nhut amid forecast additional shipments.
Firemen answered a 2:44 am call at 805 Mast 4th Street where smoke filled the house after a transformer via a stereo blew, but no damage was reported.
A native of Fannin county died from injuries in a battle accident near Victorville over the weekend. Survived by a daughter Geta Bonlee of Washington DC, mother Sally Bonlee of Ivanhoe, and two brothers Lou Brinlee of Bonham and Leroy Brinker of Ivanhoe. Funeral arrangements unknown. relatives traveled to California.
