October total of 1304 books checked out at Bonham Public Library. Mary E La Thompson, librarian, presented to the board. Fifteen new members joined in October. Breakdown shows 789 adult fiction, 177 adult non fiction, 245 juvenile fiction, and 93 juvenile non fiction. Memorial donations noted from several supporters.
Pearl Lavender, a 69 year old licensed practical nurse with a West Virginia license, uses a custom three wheel bicycle for all travel in Lubbock. She rides about three miles daily and over 900 miles yearly, working since a coal mine accident killed her husband in 1933. Lavender plans a trip back to West Virginia by bike.
Mr and Mrs Welton Hopson attended Parents Day at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. They visited with their daughter Martha Hopson a senior student this year. The TCU football team played Baylor on campus for Parents Day.
The 185th Maintenance Battalion trains Vietnamese student mechanics in an Advanced Automotive Mechanics School. After six weeks at Central Training Institute in Long Binh they enter shop work, learning to service vehicles from quarter-ton to ten-tons. Graduates receive diploma and job placement.
Dissident Catholic priests in San Antonio plan a Sunday night rally at the HemisFair convention center near the Alamo to demand Archbishop Robert E. Lucey step down. A letter by 51 priests to Pope Paul VI sparked the protests, leading Lucey to dismiss four clergy and a lay group to threaten an economic boycott.
In Kobe Japan a mountain hotel fire killed at least 26 people with 44 injured and five missing. Police recovered 26 bodies from the Kenobo Muangetsujo Inn as firefighters battled the blaze. a nine story main building and a four story annex were heavily damaged and the cause was under investigation.
Marine Lance Corporal Claude Robbins Jr., 19, of Bailey Texas, cited for devotion to duty. He serves as a flight line captain of a Phantom II jet with Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 323 in the First Marine Aircraft Wing Vietnam. The wing backs the First and Third Divisions and allied forces in five northern provinces.
Charles Robb, President Johnson's son in law, was promoted to Major in the U S Marine Corps in Da Nang Vietnam. The promotion was pinned by Maj Gen Carl Youngdale and Lt Col James Higgins. Robb said he was delighted and noted his wife Lynda recently gave birth to a daughter.
The Mennen Co. withdraws Baby Magic Bath from druggists and homes due to possible bacterial contamination. Consumers are urged to return units to Mennen in Morristown, New Jersey, or to retailers for refunds. Dealers must destroy all stock. no infections have been reported.
The Soviet Union rejected Chinese Communist charges of air space intrusion along the Siberian border. A radio broadcast claimed Beijing fabricated reports to fuel anti-Soviet hysteria over Czechoslovakia.
The First Christian church celebrates 100 years with an open house Saturday afternoon in the education building where former members will be welcomed. The Sunday program includes a noon catered dinner. Rev. John Black will lead the morning service and Rev. Don White of Paris will speak at the afternoon service. Tickets for the noon meal are sold by CYF members. The church was founded by Charles Carlton on May 31 1868 who came from Kentuckytown after establishing a prior church.
The Carlton family helped form the first Disciples of Christ church in Dallas in 1863. The church marked a century with a sanctuary built during Rev Carlos M Schoonover’s ministry and dedicated April 7 1912. Centennial planning was led by J Bacon Saunders then O M Weat. Bob Cantrell to welcome visitors at morning services.
Mrs Emerson hosts a Halloween social at Randolph home with costumes led by Mable London choosing winners including Alex Sewell as Baby Snooks and Ed Brandt as a tramp. Norma Beaty spoke on home safety while Eighty seconds of home and travel safety statistics were cited. Officers were elected with Mrs Emerson named.
