Viet Cong shelled central Saigon amid a national holiday parade wounding 37 and killing 13, including an American officer. A minesweeper was hit and casualties spread at markets and near the reviewing stand as government dignitaries watched.
The first snow of the season fell in the Texas Panhandle Monday night and early today as cold winds whipped wintry rain into North Central Texas. Winds up to 50 miles an hour blew dust 30 000 feet high in West Texas and gusts reached 43 miles an hour in San Antonio bringing dust and a dropping thermometer as rain is forecast to move across South Central and Southeast Texas.
A cold front moved off the upper Texas coast extending westward. Snow and sleet fell from Texline to Odessa and Midland with strong winds and poor visibility. Temperatures head toward the 20s across the Panhandle and South Plains as clearing skies spread north and west.

In Los Angeles, surgical patients children and elderly residents were moved from a sanatorium and veterans hospital due to a fast spreading blaze in the San Gabriel Mountains. A 100 man military team relocated Nike missiles to underground bunkers at Los Pinos Peak while Forest Service crews ringed the hilltop site.
Air Force Staff Sgt. Herbert William Boeckenhaupt aged 23 was arraigned on charges of conspiring to commit espionage with a Russian diplomat. FBI says he was arrested at March Air Force Base in Riverside in what officials call a major espionage case.
Alan A. Bud Hulsey a Dallas greeting card producer and Fannin County landowner, allegedly financed and arranged the flight of Joe Truehill of Richardson and two companions from a Brazilian prison. Hulsey posed as an American cattle buyer while visiting the trio and later managed their escape back to the United States. Dun can, as ranch manager, oversaw operations east of Ivanhoe.
Dr. Samuel H. Sheppard returned to the Suburban Bay Village home where authorities allege he killed his pregnant wife in 1954. A jury of 11 men and 5 women traveled by bus from the Cuyahoga County Criminal Courts Building to the murder scene for his retrial in Cleveland.
A group of 18 to 23 year olds in Ector were held by the sheriff after a 1953 car was overturned, doused with gasoline, and set ablaze on main street.
