Dr. Matthews of Exastate College Denton urges 2P seniors to feel the mercy and face the world’s challenges at Bonham High School commencement. He says no leader can give meaning purpose or moral standards without effort from individuals.
Dr Matthews addresses 85 graduates urging personal responsibility as the nation’s hope. He says the real drama is choosing to lead better lives and contribute to a stronger America, telling the class it is high time to act.
Judy Creed from Monahans graduates high school and enlists in the Army Medical Corps for nurse training, reporting to Fort Bliss then Alabama. A commencement includes remarks by Dr. Matthews urging duty to liberty, revival of founding fathers’ beliefs, and graduation diplomas awarded by John Meade.
The State Department dismissed Vodny Transport charges that U S warplanes buzzed Red freighters across Atlantic Pacific Mediterranean Bering and Japan seas as an effort to capitalize on the U 2 incident. Officials noted repeated past complaints but said shoots were only for ship identification and found no buzzing. The department had no details on any near ships incident and the Defense Department declined to comment.
Bonham High School recognized four special awards during the Monday night commencement exercises for the 1960 graduating class. Laqueta Cain won the annual Bonham Business and Professional Women's Club scholarship, while Becky Biggerstaff received the Bonham Rotary good citizen trophy. Rotary scholarships went to Betty Jane Aaron and Richard Leon Cashion.
UPI reports Texas Rep. Olin D. Teague says the surprise attack at Pearl Harbor could have been avoided if the United States had known as much about Japan in 1941 as it knows about Russia in 1960. He warned that greater vigilance would have spared the nation from mourning its heroes.
Gerald Money arrives from Chanute Field Illinois for a 15 day leave with grandmother Mrs Winnie Money and uncle and aunt Rev and Mrs Paul Campbell. A 1959 Bonham high school graduate, Money entered TCU at Fort Worth last September but joined the US Air Force in December and trained at Lackland AFB. He was sent to Chanute Field for Weather Observation training earlier this year and will be stationed at Bergstrom AFB near Austin after his leave.
Negro leaders denounced the Houston School Board token integration plan as callous and against the Supreme Court spirit. The board approved a voluntary integration plan for a high school, a junior high, and an elementary school in September 1961 and attorney Frances Williams of the NAACP said a federal protest would be filed.
Thomas Ernest Milstead, son of Mrs. Virgie Milstead of Bonham, was shot and seriously wounded in Tulsa. Milstead, a dog pound clerk, was shot by a 28 year old man after refusing to release a dog held for observation. Witnesses say Milstead offered the dog the next day.
The U S Weather Bureau continues its forecast of widely scattered thundershowers for the Bonham area through Wednesday. Little temperature change is expected in the next 24 to 36 hours as skies remain partly cloudy. Bonham recorded a low in the teens and a high in the mid 80s Monday.
President Eisenhower will broaden his Far East itinerary to include the Philippines Formosa and Okinawa along with Japan Korea and Alaska. The move follows Khrushchev cancelleing a planned Russia visit and aims to show U S support amid Japan's anti U S riots and protests against the Kishi treaty.
Atty. Gen Will Wilson said the tidelands case is settled and he will seek an early Galveston hearing to pursue an injunction removing barriers from West Galveston Beach. He expects the Supreme Court opinion to clarify legal points relevant to open-beach legislation from the last legislative session.
United Press International tallies show 550 holiday fatalities during the 78 hour Memorial Day weekend with 115 drownings 35 highway deaths and 82 other accidents. California leads with 27 deaths followed by New York Illinois and Pennsylvania. A crash near Cambridge Ohio killed six soldiers and a grandstand collapse at Indianapolis International Speedway killed two fans. Clarksville Tennessee reports a family tragedy as Jenner children disappear after fishing trip.
Senate antitrust subcommittee questioned costs for antibiotic drugs and a so called wonder drug program. Testimony targeted former FDA official Henry Welch and asked about $287 242 earnings over ten years from private medical publications as Welfare Secretary Flemming and FDA head Larrick were called to testify.
Governor John Patterson files a one million dollar suit against the New York Times and five ministers over a March 29 full page ad described as false and malicious. The banner ad raised funds for Martin Luther King Jr’s legal defense after his acquittal on perjury in Atlanta. The signature list includes Eleanor Roosevelt and other liberals.
Texas officials hailed the U S Supreme Court decision restoring tidelands rights to Texas and Florida. Attorney General Will Wilson called it historic for school children while Governor Price Daniel praised honesty and justice in federal relations. The ruling would release about 30 million dollars held in escrow for the Permanent School Fund.
Fannin county experienced an accident free Memorial Day as State Highway Patrolman Bob Walker reported no accidents during the holiday period. Texas recorded a 3 day death toll of 33 including 13 traffic deaths and nine drownings with other incidents making up the remainder.
The Supreme Court rules Texas may control tidelands and oil to 10 miles offshore. Federal authority extends beyond three leagues in neighboring states Louisiana Mississippi and Alabama. Florida retains a three-mile marine belt. Escrow funds totaling 908 million dollars await disposition to the U.S. Treasury.
President Eisenhower told SEATO allies at a White House lunch not to relax vigilance against Communist aggression or subversion in the Far East. Vice President Nixon urged firmness with Russia and suggested more diplomacy may occur, but no ruling out future summits. SEATO members include Australia Britain France New Zealand Pakistan the Philippines Thailand and the United States.
