Grayson County History and Early Courthouse Details
Grayson County was formed in 1846 from Fannin County and named for Peter W. Grayson a Texas Republic-era attorney general and presidential candidate. The first county seat was at the center of the county later known as Old Sherman with courts held at Robert Atchison’s home on Pilot Knobs until a courthouse could be built. The original courthouse plan described a 24 by 24 foot frame with two doors two windows weathered shingle roof and simple carpentry details. The item appears in the Sherman Democrat.
