Dick Travis manager of the Bonham Safeway store was named president of the Bonham United Fund for 1960. He was elected at a directors meeting held Tuesday at the Texas Power and Light Co auditorium. Six new directors were elected for three year terms and a vice president campaign director will be chosen later. The new board includes Mrs. Lewie Morgan Rev. E J Tarbox Martin Hassell Jack Smith W E Washerlesky and Travis as sixth three year director.

The Labor Department reports the consumer price index rose four tenths of a percent in April, the largest monthly gain since last June, driven by a 1.5 percent food price increase. Auto and farm equipment workers tied to the index will gain a two cent hourly wage rise for 975,000 workers. Take home pay for the average factory worker with three dependents fell to 80.20 per week due to shorter hours and the Good Friday holiday.

Water conversion plant contract awarded soon in Texas
Federal officials expect to award within 10 days a contract for a water conversion demonstration plant at Freeport Texas. It will be first of five plants funded by 10 million dollars from Congress using the long-tube vertical multiple effect distillation method to turn salt water into fresh. Construction should be finished in nine months after bids opened Tuesday at the Office of Saline Water. A spokesman said evaluation would take about 10 days.

Delay in Tax Cut Okayed By House Committee
The House Ways and Means Committee approved, without change, a one year delay in four billion dollars of tax cuts set for July 1. It backed maintaining present tax rates, extending the debt ceiling at 293 billion, and blocking reductions on corporate earnings, liquor, beer, wine, cigarettes, and auto taxes. It also kept telephone tax at 10 percent and train and travel taxes at 10 percent for another year. Corporate rate stays at 52 percent, delaying cuts to 47 percent.
