Center Texas May 21 Evans a negro from Irvin charged with killing John Wheeler and clubbing San Augustine town marshal Frank Hight was lynched by about fifty men. He was hanged to a large oak in front of the courthouse. The body hung at 9 a.m. Local residents reported the town quieted after the mob action. Evans had earlier clubbed Hight in the jail and escaped before being recaptured by a posse.
