A large cistern twelve feet in diameter and twenty feet deep was found under a house on the cleared Safeway site. Manager Ciff Lumpkins said the structure will be filled before construction proceeds. The find occurred as bulldozers cleared trees and obstructions on the lot.
M. L. Brent spends a couple of days mowing the front yard with a riding mower and considers turning part of the area into a pasture to let cows keep it mowed.
Federal agents arrested four suspects including Manuel Dominguez Suarez 49 of Mexico City and Yolanda Yanez Schmidt 320 of Mexico City after a seizure officials called the largest heroin haul to date valued at 25 million dollars. Alfredo Montemayor 33 and Salvador Mazatini 36 of San Antonio were charged in the case. Suarez attempted suicide by cutting his throat while being booked. All faced conspiracy transport and sale charges with additional counts for selling heroin. Bond and arraignment details were noted but incomplete.
UPI reports 57 Vietnamese civilians killed and 82 wounded in shelling and terror raids by guerrilla forces during the night across northern Vietnam. Da Nang, Tam Ky and Da Nang area suffered multi-rocket and mine strikes. 26 killed and five wounded from a mine near Tad Ky. Cambodian forces reportedly capturing villages as operations unfold.
United Press International reports widespread campus protests with tear gas used at Wisconsin Kentucky and West Virginia and 12 injured at SUNY Buffalo. About 336 colleges faced closures as thousands boycotted classes amid nationwide strike activity.
Texas Highway Commission conditionally approved a 2.2 mile access road from FM 892 to the south end of Lake Bonham to serve a 94 acre park area. The project, cost about 1 million dollars, will provide all weather access to beaches boat ramps and piers, linking with a planned subdivision and expanding recreational facilities in Fannin County Bonham Water Authority led the request.
Apollo 13 flight postponed at least two months from October to December with potential further delay into 1971 due to oxygen tank modifications. Washington officials reported April unemployment jumped to 8.4 percent with jobless rolls reaching 3.9 million, the highest in over six years. The Labor Department noted a 0.4 percentage point rise from March and marked the second consecutive one month increase since December.
