Civil rights leaders and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr halt planned disruption of the Kentucky Derby to press for an open housing law in Louisville. Officials move 2,500 security personnel to Churchill Downs as Derby week events are scaled back amid threats of demonstrations.
Sam Jones 70 of Leonard was seriously hurt in a one vehicle crash on Valley Creek road Friday night. Highway Patrolman Jake Jackson said the pickup struck a telephone post and slid to its side along a embankment before stopping. He was taken to Bonham hospital with shoulder injuries cuts bruises and possible internal injuries.
In a weekend battle near Saigon and along the DMZ region, North Vietnamese forces pressed mortar and rocket attacks while Marines held Hill 881 and Binh Tuy defenses. U.S. losses included a Marine killed and six wounded. one U.S. soldier and 30 Vietnamese civilians died in the Mekong Delta assault. American pilots were reported missing after jet losses in the Hanoi area.
Z W Trout former Gober schools principal and superintendent is named business manager for the Bonham district. Joe Campbell will assume Bonham superintendency in June with M B Nelson resigning. Trout, a Gober native, holds multiple degrees and serves as a Baptist deacon and teacher. He begins duties after his Gober resignation July 1.
London officials report Prime Minister Harold Wilson with considerable optimism Britain will join the European Common Market. He plans a formal membership application next week as Parliament debates and De Gaulle’s position remains cautious, with a May 16 news conference anticipated for a reaction.
Reports from Tokyo indicate at least 11 killed and about 2,000 wounded in clashes between Reg Guards and anti Communist factions in Chengtu Sichuan province. Wall posters in Peking sparked street fighting requiring army intervention and a warning from the official press.
In Panama City Beach Florida seventeen people were rescued from the 55 foot Marinn which burned furiously off the Gulf of Mexico. Coast Guard crews arrived within minutes and towed the occupants to the Panama City station with no serious injuries reported. The cause of the fire was not known.

Connally labels the bill inadequate and accuses Aiken of diverting funds from education health juvenile programs and highway safety for higher pay. Aiken asserts he will vote his convictions for his district despite political pressure.
