Campbell Sports Association holds a 42 tournament with stew supper at 5 30 pm in the school cafeteria and a 6 30 pm start. The same day the annual Gober community barbecue at the school gym opens around 5 pm with many locals expected and candidate cards to collect.
A sweeping winter storm causes widespread ice and snow across Michigan New York New England and the West. Michigan declares emergencies while utilities rush crews from Chicago Cleveland and Toledo to restore power. Dry ice shortages appear as fear of spoilage prompts large freezer shipments.
National Weather Service expects a 30 percent chance of showers in the Bonham area tonight after earlier forecasts. A very light shower was reported in Bonham between midnight and 1 a.m. and in Honey Grove. A cool front stalled and moved back north as a warm front with another front potentially lowering temperatures tonight. Lows in the upper 40s, highs near 60 Sunday. daytime cool, partly cloudy. Cold weather continues in the Panhandle.
A 26 foot Disabled American Veterans Field Service Unit will visit the Bonham courthouse on Saturday from 9am to 6pm offering free counseling and claims help to veterans and families. National Service Officers will assist with federal and state benefit claims including disability, pension, employment, education, hospitalization and Social Security. The DAV tour has connected with more than 98,000 veterans and dependents in two years, filing 6,000 new claims and reopening 33,000. Membership in DAV not required for service.
Victor Barner, 54, died after apparently falling into the Neches River Bayou near Vidor, Texas. Deputy sheriffs recovered the body, Justice of the Peace Joe Bunn ordered an autopsy, and Barner's car was found nearby with keys in the ignition. the fall may have occurred Tuesday afternoon.
Fannin county motorists may register vehicles for 1976 on March 20 and March 27 from 8 am to 12 pm, with normal hours on other days. Tax assessor Robert Dale promoted registrations in Honey Grove Ladona Leonard and Trenton, noting only small stickers will be issued for 1976 plates.
Senator Birch Bayh of Indiana quits the race citing a depleted treasury and poor results in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. He becomes an inactive candidate while seven Democrats remain in the contest and Udall calls for Bayh supporters to back his campaign.
Liberal Democrat Bayh quits active campaigning after New England losses leaving seven Democrats in the field. Udall Jackson Carter Wallace Harris Shriver McCormack Shapp remain in the race as Ford and Reagan draw big early momentum in Florida and Illinois. Udall appeals to liberals in New York to unite or risk Jackson, Carter, or Wallace securing the nomination. Jackson notes his Massachusetts win signals strength in industrial states.
The Labor Department reports February wholesale prices fell 0.5 percent, the largest monthly decline in nearly a year, driven by lower food costs and easing inflation in industrial goods. Fuel and power costs declined as crude prices dropped under the Energy Policy and Conservation Act.
Senate Democratic Leader Mike Mansfield announced he will not seek reelection at age 72. The Montana lawmaker, who has served since 1953 and led the Senate as majority leader since 1961, said the decision was final after discussions with his wife Maureen Hayes Mansfield. He previously served five House terms before his 1952 election to the Senate.
A man cleaning his home in Shreveport found a jar containing formaldehyde and a set of human fingers. Richard Mizzle surrendered the jar to police who forwarded it to the Caddo Parish coroner. Officials say the fingers likely belonged to a medical student.
Governor Dolph Briscoe warned Texas faces bankruptcy if agencies do not curb budgets. He backed a 5 percent employee cut, halted new colleges, and wrote budgets to fit revenue. Lt Governor Hobby and Speaker Clayton echoed calls to cut costs and limit public relations spending.
