District clerk Robert Dorough describes filling a pen cartridge with ink from a used syringe to avoid refills. He explains the method keeps ink flowing and has saved costs while busy closing out records for the January term.
Joe Stinson warns of a danger to freshly poured concrete as boys ride bicycles before it sets. Sunday features Elwood homecoming and a classroom picnic lunch under Bill Scrivner's shaded lawn. A church program Sunday night will collect for the Elwood cemetery upkeep fund. Bartley Woods Community Improvement Club plans a family picnic at Cunningham Cantrell cabins on Lake Texoma Saturday night with no fixed start or end times.
A quartet of high school girls performed a musical program at the Lions club meeting Thursday noon. The group included Mary Lou Wilshire Betty Boone Debby Fitzwater and Nancy Littrell with Jane Walker on piano. Guests were Judge A M Harrison of Paris and Robert Hodges of Savoy.
French Prime Minister Georges Pompidou will travel to the Soviet Union from July 3 to July 8 with Foreign Minister Maurice Couve de Murville, as Soviet Premier Alexei N. Kosygin stops in Paris en route home from Cuba and the United Nations.
Four cases were to be placed before the 6th District grand jury for the January term. Major attention focused on the murder of Ella B. Hamner and the armed robbery of Weldon and Mrs. Doggett, with Gene Danner as foreman. Other indictable matters include theft over 50 dollars and disposing of mortgaged property, presented by County Attorney Pat Beene. Charles Frank King, a Black man, was arrested for Hamner’s murder, while Paul Ray Garrison faced charges in the Doggett robbery and was in custody after Rangers brought him to Bonham.
President Johnson signed a three year extension of the Teacher Corps at Sullivan’s Industrialization Center in Philadelphia. He praised Rev. Leon H. Sullivan for organizing the program and urged top college graduates to join and expand the effort to 275 existing sites with a goal to double it next fall.
A Canadian cold front bringing cooler air and scattered showers moves through the Bonham region tonight and Friday. Showers end overnight, with cloudier skies and lower temperatures persisting into Friday. West Texas saw 20 degree drops and 100 degree highs earlier. Bonham reached a 96 degree high today with the low 70s overnight.
Col. Homer Garrison announces Operation Motorcide to reduce Texas highway deaths during the July 4 holiday. The crackdown runs 6 p m Friday to 11 59 p m Tuesday with thrice daily fatalities tallies and extra patrols to deter speeding and unsafe driving. He warns drivers that awareness and adherence to traffic laws can materially cut accidents.
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip depart London for a seven day Canadian tour aimed at avoiding Quebec protests from 1964. They fly to Ottawa and plan a visit to Expo 67 in Montreal but will stay within the fairgrounds amid past anti-British unrest in the city.
Joseph Stassi, 60, of Brooklyn, convicted of conspiring to smuggle 4.5 million dollars worth of heroin into the United States, received an 18 year prison term and a $20,000 fine. The judge ordered the sentence run with a four year Florida perjury term, and denied bond during appeal.
The Texas Selective Service announces a August draft quota of 1,421 Texans for Army service, the highest monthly allotment this year, as draftees from the Vietnam buildup era are discharged and replaced. An additional 6,220 men will undergo pre induction exams, with state quotas mailed around July 5.
Washington report on a House Senate compromise redistricting plan being sent back to a conference committee for repair after Senate opposition. The plan aimed to guide states in redrawing districts following the Supreme Court one person one vote ruling, but liberals found it too generous.
U S Air Cavalrymen using a jungle map from a Viet Cong deserter overran a Communist base camp and pursued a 400 strong battalion toward the Dong Nai River bank in War Zone D northeast of Saigon. South Vietnamese forces helped form a barrier against retreat.
The defense report details a misrouted message delaying a warning to the USS Liberty before an Israeli attack that killed 34 Americans and wounded 75. The Navy court found the ship in international waters with an unprovoked attack but offered no full explanation for the incident.
Henry Lee Woodberry, 56, and grandson Edward Glenn Lewis, 10, drowned at a farm pond on the Howard Davis farm three miles west of Wolfe City. Lewis slipped and called for help. Woodberry jumped in to aid, both went under. Luther Woodberry, 14, summoned aid as authorities arrived and recovered the bodies about 40 minutes later. Justice of the Peace ruled accidental drowning.
At the United Nations, 35 sponsors led by Yugoslavia seek an immediate vote on a compromise resolution to withdraw Israeli troops from Arab soil and avoid annexation, aiming to bridge US and Soviet positions amid Jerusalem tensions and calls against permanent seizure of Arab funds.
In Rangoon Burmese troops armed with machine guns forced residents indoors as three days of anti Peking rioting peaked with the stabbing of two men near the Chinese Communist Embassy. Gen Ne Win imposed martial law, aiming to quell a riot that left 30 or more dead, including a Peking technical aid worker stabbed inside the embassy.
