Eisenhower Opposes Wage and Price Controls in Inflation Fight

President Eisenhower said he opposes wage and price controls as a cure for inflation. He urged business and labor leaders to restrain price and wage increases and warned that failing to show restraint could push the United States toward socialism as Khrushchev warned. He noted no plans to cut U.S. military forces abroad except possibly Japan and discussed a visa transfer proposal and Supreme Court decisions on rights. The president’s plane encountered mechanical trouble at Langley Field before he continued to Washington by Air Force.

First cotton bloom of 1957 reported in Fannin County

Bel Cantred notes the first cotton bloom of 1957 in Fannin County brought to The Favorite by Robert Price who farms 10 acres between Bonham State Park and Cotton Center. The stalk stood about a foot high with several squares and a bloom. Ottis Sinks delayed mowing due to a stolen spark plug for the courthouse lawn mower.

Rites Held for Brigance and Barron Teens in Bonham Crash

Funeral services were held for Dale Brigance 13 and Earl D Barron Jr 16 who died Monday in a State Highway 121 crash south of Bonham. Brigance's service was at Congregational Methodist church with interment at Willow Wald. Barron's service followed at Wise Funeral Home with burial at Willow Wild. Survivors include their mothers, grandparents, and great grandparents. The driver W J Pritchett of Paris escaped with minor injuries as investigators probed the first fatality incident in Fannin County.
