A public safety note warns that holiday travel around Independence Day and Labor Day will flood highways. It stresses both fast and slow driving can cause crashes, urges rest breaks and early starts, and concludes it is better to arrive late alive than not at all.
President Eisenhower, leading a government in exile, declared a mock martial law across the nation during the Operation Alert civil defense drill. Officials reported simulated casualties reaching 7.6 million dead and 5 million injured across 61 cities, while 10 million more were conservatively dubbed dead if people were trapped. The exercise involved 15,000 officials and centered on restoring communications, transport, and production after a simulated nuclear attack.
