Jimmy Van Zandt, son of Mr and Mrs H R Van Zandt in Bonham, displays a Tennessee muzzle loading squirrel rifle named Betsy. Sent by uncle H R Moore of Huntland Tennessee, the rifle has attracted local youngsters since its arrival before the Davy Crockett boom. The heavy gun remains unused beyond admiration as Jimmy figures out a practical use.
Democratic National Chairman Paul Butler lands in Texas to reconcile the rival liberal and conservative factions ahead of the 1956 convention. Governor Allan Shivers leads a boycott of Butler’s events, while LBJ and Price Daniel stay on the sidelines. Butler plans stops in Lubbock, Big Spring, Dallas, Tyler, and Waco to press party unity.

Dallas man Louisy faces charges over an alleged attack on a 14 year old girl in Nobility southwest Fannin county. The suspect was arrested in Dallas late Saturday and returned to Bonham Sunday morning. Trial scheduled this afternoon in Leonard before Justice of the Peace Tom Reece, with County Attorney Thirby Wright present.
Rotary club members are reminded that their weekly meeting moved from Wednesday to Thursday noon for a joint session with the Lions club. A special program is planned for Thursday only at the joint gathering.
City commissioners approved a $1.36 per $100 valuation tax rate for 1955, the same as 1954, with a $75,523.35 estimated revenue for sinking, general and street funds. The equalization board reported city property values at $6,170,208.52, up $256,894.19 from 1954, including rendered and unrendered real and personal property. Tax bills will reflect a city poll tax and other levies, and 90 percent collection is assumed for budgeting, though past years saw higher actual receipts. Several property appeals were rejected at the meeting.
Bonham city commission plans action to eliminate odors and dust from Hi Yield Fertilizer Co. A 20 member resident delegation heard a letter from W M Kulers promising a chemist study. Wilery will send WK Wardlaw and WT Ballard to Bonham in June for check up and recommendations.

Judge A M Harrison in Sixth District Court placed Bobby McLemore and Henry Allen Underwood on seven year prison terms probated for good behavior after they pled guilty to armed robbery. Both waived jury trials and entered pleas before the judge as eight cases in two days concluded with four jury and four court pleas.
