The Fannin County Democratic Women invite precinct county district and state candidates to attend a dinner meeting at 7 p.m. next Monday in the Gem Cafe banquet room. It will be a meet and greet without speeches, aiming to connect candidates with constituents.
J T Roach of the Bonham VA Center engineering division won a $10 award under the Employee Incentive Awards Program for an electric lawn edging machine modification. A buffer plate on the cutting blade reduces wear and extends the machine’s life. Jimmie K Caplinger received a certificate for an idea to improve operating efficiency.
Dan Barnard, manager of the Fannin County ASC office, announced two measurement teams will start this week. One team of experienced workers will begin Thursday to measure planted acreage of cotton and peanut, while a second team of less experienced workers will start later.
A forecast shows continued cloudy and cool weather with possible scattered thundershowers in the Bonham area through Tuesday. Sunday recorded a high of 78 and a low of 59 with a light shower totaling 0.09 inch Sunday morning.
Dr John J Mosely president of Austin College Sherman will give the commencement address at Bonham High School tonight at 8 oclock in the high school auditorium. The program includes Pomp and Circumstance by Harriet Hassell Janet Smith Sally Risser Karen Butler. invocaton by Ben Kennedy benediction by Don Kennedy. solos by Linda Dearing and Anne Harper. Awards presented by T E Anderson diplomas by Dr L C Biggers to 70 graduates. Five students tie for first honors and receive valedictorian medals.
The June term Sixth District Court grand jury convened at 10 this morning to begin reviewing cases submitted by County Attorney Tibby Wright. Foreman Claude Leatherwood leads a panel including John Arledge, P. McIver, B. K Johnson, L. FP. Bennett, J. P. Dawson, Arthur Stapp, Warren Ross, Gaylen Murray, Roy Leslie, Homer Sledge, and others. Wright expects completion within a day and a half.
The county board of school trustees will meet at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the office of County Superintendent Jim Moulton to check transfer applications. May 31 was the deadline for students on the scholastic census to transfer between districts for school attendance. The board will hear protests on transfers at the meeting.
Leonard residents plan Sam Rayburn Day on Friday July 20 at the Leonard Picnic with Speaker Rayburn to give an address and a free barbecue for all attendees.
Democratic Chairman Paul Butler predicted the Democratic Party’s national convention in August will approve a civil rights plank without a serious fight. He announced J Leonard Rein as convention director and said advisory committees will report on civil rights before the Aug. 6 platform meeting. Butler denied plans to delay the convention to hassle Republicans.

The North Texas Methodist Conference in Dallas named new pastors for Bonham area churches and surrounding districts. Rev. Earl M. Jones moves to First Methodist Bonham, Rev. William Greenhaw to Lancaster Avenue in Grand Prairie, Rev. Larry Eaton to Clark Memorial in Dallas, and Rev. Dan Leander to Maple Lawn in Dallas. Several other ministers receive assignments across Fannin and Paris districts, including Rev. Tom Graves in Bailey, Rev. Jack McNabb in Dodd City, and Rev. Raymond Trompler returning to Fannin county therapies. The Windom circuit will be supplied.
Bailey weather records show 16.80 inches of rain from January through May 1956, per observer C A McMillen. May rainfall reached 3.70 inches, with May 1956 temperatures peaking at 95 and dipping to 66.
