Legislators Still Have Lots to Do in Washington and Texas
In Washington Senator William Proxmire urged taxing chauffeured government car service for federal officials, saying it is not official business. In Austin Texas legislators entered a three day countdown to adjournment and debated a $65.4 million school finance bill raising teacher salaries by 1,400 dollars and aiming to equalize funding while facing possible opposition and a conference committee. Negotiations on the utility regulation bill stalled for the third straight day as a conference panel planned to reconvene, and House leaders projected a Monday vote on a proposed 12 billion dollar state budget if Senate action allows.
