Rains drenched wide areas of Texas with deadly downpours blamed for at least eight deaths. From Central Texas to the Edwards Plateau and along the Gulf Coast heavy showers caused multiple traffic accidents and a fatal lightning strike near Trinity Bay. Temperatures ranged from 55 to 82 as the storm system moved eastward and northeastward.
Growing Spuds show strong first trial as Halls-Willie and partners averaged 175 bushels on 15 acres. Pascal Farley marketed the crop through Whitewright, earning about 4 cents per pound and about $270 per bushel total, with both white and red varieties. Planting used 300 pounds of 10-20-10 fertilizer. harvest was by hand with Mexican labor assistance.
The Senate Judiciary Committee postponed a civil rights showdown after a two hour session. Supporters saw hope for committee approval as Sen John A Carroll pledged to move for immediate consideration by next Monday on the subcommittee approved bill.
Western powers prepare to challenge the Soviet proposal on Berlin at Geneva. Andrej Gromyko presents a plan to study German reunification with a four power body, while the West readies an alternative by endorsing a Bonn led commission with East and West Germans.
Allen Memorial hospital lines up a Tuesday morning reopening with two new advisory members Ray Peeler Jr and John Arledge. The wife of novelist William Faulkner, her son, and two others escaped serious injuries after a Saturday night wagon collision near Webby Og Udetude Ah Cbatasays. Authorities investigated the crash and treated minor injuries at the scene.
Thousands of Cuban peasants gathered for a weeklong celebration of the revolution and pledge of allegiance to Fidel Castro. New president Osvaldo Minues Torrada outlined revolutionary laws after Castro ousted Urrutia, who fled to his brother in law’s home near Havana as the army guarded it. Across Oriente province, tens of thousands are expected to converge on Havana with machetes in a show of support for Castro’s regime.
Washington reports death of William D Leahy aged 84 at Navy Medical Center Bethesda Md. He served as wartime chief of staff to Presidents Roosevelt and Truman and was celebrated for shaping U S policy and the war effort. His son Rear Adm William H Leahy commanded Norfolk Navy Shipyard.
In Austin the House opened a new session week debating a 2.4 million dollar spending program and a tax bill for the Senate. Speaker Waggoner Carr urged quick passage while the Appropriations Committee drafted the tax measure and the biennial budget from a deficit general revenue fund.
Dr Malek a physician at the Bonham VA hospital will address the Kiwanis luncheon at the Gem cafe on Tuesday. A native of Iran he will discuss Iran affairs and government with A H Godet introducing the speaker.
Bolivia ends the state of siege imposed after the April 19 uprising in which rightist leader Oscar Unzaga de la Vega and several followers were killed. The government also announced the deportation of 46 people implicated in the Santa Cruz uprising.
Long of Tucumcari with his physician and state racing chief left El Paso for Denver after a Texas trip marked by profanity and threats. He attended a Baptist church, visited Juarez, and planned a Monterrey stop while hoping to “lose” himself on the Denver trip.
Federal mediation chief Joseph Finnegan met with United Steelworkers and 12 major steel companies to resolve a five day walkout as J & L seeks injunctions against picketing at three plants. Senators Javits and Kefauver urged presidential action and anti monopoly hearings to probe steel price hikes amid the strike.
Charles Carey reports two Sunday incidents near Denison and Ravenna. Johnny D. Riggs, 3 miles west of Bonham, left 82 over Caney Creek, total wreck. C B Clem of Whitewright, 1 mile east of Ravenna, off FM 1753, $150 damage, uninjured. A Windom one car crash west of town caused no injuries or damage.
Considerable cloudiness persists through Tuesday with scattered thunder showers. No significant temperature changes expected.
