Alaska’s Mount McKinley rises to 20 320 feet, claiming the tallest mountain title in North America.
U S Marines with tanks planes ships and hand to hand fighting stopped a 2 500 man assault near Con Thien. 51 Marines killed 170 wounded 34 missing amid heavy artillery and ninja uniforms used by retreating enemy. 65 bodies found and 200 seen. North Vietnamese sorties included 325R Division with 4 000 artillery rounds. 54 Viet Cong killed near Bong Son Plains. 19 U S dead 33 wounded. South Korea troops lightly hurt in mined truck incident. Air strikes hit targets near Hanoi and War Zone C.
Israeli and Egyptian forces fired mortars and machine guns across the Suez Canal in a third day of cease fire violations. An Israeli communiqué said Israeli troops returned fire and silenced Egyptian fire within minutes. The clash lasted about 20 minutes just north of Qantana as UN delegates debated resolutions to resolve the Arab Israeli conflict.
In River Oaks a burglar shot Patrolman Sam Overton in the back with the thief's pistol near River Oaks City Hall and a beauty shop. Patrolman L. Batley wounded the burglar as he escaped after a firefight in the dark. Overton, 27, is in critical condition.
Chief Thurman Renfro reported a busy weekend with several arrests for drunkenness and disturbance. One defendant was fined 125 dollars in two cases.
President Johnson gains in public polls and among Democratic governors after Middle East crisis handling and Kosygin summits. A Louis Harris poll shows 58 percent rate him good to excellent, with governors praising his policies at the St. Louis meeting. Vietnam policy remains a drawback with 54 percent unhappy.
Officers estimated damage at 175 after a passing motorist struck a parked car on East 7th Street Sunday. Detectives identified the driver as Willie Dean Thomas. The parked car belonged to Bernie Henson.
The Defense Industrial Supply center in Philadelphia announced a contract for 94 000 feet of telephone cable totaling 182 172 to General Cable Corp Bonham plant. It marks the fourth such award in recent weeks with prior totals of 105 000 feet 60 270 dollars, 70 000 feet 73 280 dollars, and 24 000 feet 26 400 dollars.
National Safety Council data warn up to 800 people could die in traffic during the 102 hour period. At 3 am EDT the UP I counted 487 total deaths across traffic plan es and drownings. Texas led with 38 traffic deaths followed by California 29 New York 25 Illinois 24 and Ohio 18. Alaska Delaware Hawaii Vermont and Wyoming reported no deaths.

Tornadoes were sighted near Happy Adrian Littlefield Hereford Broadfield and near Munday and Haskell with one area seeing 1.40 inches in 20 minutes. Streets flooded in Hereford and Longview with four inch rain in Gregg County. Highs reached 101 in Presidio Wichita Falls Laredo and Alice 99 in Waco.
A Sunday morning crash on State Highway 78 ten miles north of Bonham involved a truck driven by Hubert Nichols of Ravenna and a car driven by Jacqueline Hamby of Yuba Oklahoma. Nichols left to enter a fish place while Hamby traveled south. both vehicles were 1966 models and damaged about 1000 dollars. No injuries were reported.
Deputy Sheriff H. R. Van Zandt went to Ladonia Monday morning to investigate a burglary. He was called to Ladonia by Constable Matt Milford. Deputies were also called to Leonard Saturday to aid Constable Wade Morris in a burglary investigation there.
Secretary of State Dean Rusk and Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge say no early end to fighting in Vietnam is likely. Lodge, a former Saigon ambassador, predicts long American presence with big military results in 1-2 years and casualties down by year’s end. Rusk notes no sign Hanoi will settle honorably and cites de escalation proposals and withdrawal plans as options.
The Dek ly Favorite will go to press early on Tuesday to give employees part of the July 4 holiday. A 10 a.m. press time is planned with immediate delivery after. The office closes after 3 p.m. Complaint service remains until then as Bonham observes Independence Day on the merchant holiday list.
