Bonham prepares for a large Fourth of July celebration at the State Park as most local businesses shut down to allow residents to attend the holiday event. The report notes a somber line about 279 accident deaths.
Bonham Mayor Joe Hrdlicka urges all firms to display The Stars and Stripes tomorrow as stores close for the Fourth of July. A mammoth celebration at State Park draws many out-of-town investors and local crowds, with businesses joining in the holiday air.
Clarence Giles 45, an auctioneer from Terry Montana, reached the 200th mile of a 288 mile descent of the Yellowstone River. He began Friday noon and aims to surpass the 281 mile world record set by Pedro A. Candiotti, with the 147 mile American mark by Charles Zimmy previously held.
The Texas State Employment Service, under J. E. Christian, reports 766 June placements, with 203 in private work, 36 in public firms, and 527 in farm jobs. For six months in 1939, 1,774 placements occurred, including 743 private, 312 public, and 910 farm roles, amid improved employment in Bonham.
Henry Allen a longtime Windom area settler died at his home north of Windom Saturday. Burial followed this afternoon at Honey Grove. Survived by widow, several sons, one daughter and other relatives. A cousin of A. B. Allen of Bonham and second cousin of Ralph Allen in the Favorite office. Age about 60.
Houston dispatch reports Joe Crowder a 36 year old company employee found near a railroad with his left hand mangled says three men kidnapped him robbed him of $2 and tied him to the tracks. He escaped as the train approached but could not free his hand. In Austin seven names are discussed for governor in 1940 with William O Daniel Ernest O Thompson and Joe Hill among likely entrants.
Congress delays funding for the government expedition to the Antarctic to stake claims amid an international scramble. President Roosevelt signed the appropriation but officials say September is the latest the Byrd mission could sail. lack of funds may prevent ordering sleds tractors planes and other gear in time.
The Daily Favorite will not print on Tuesday July 4 and all staff will receive a holiday. Employees may take an outing to a Fannin County park if they wish.
PROCKVILLE Ont July 3 Two Louisiana State officials arrived by airplane today to take custody of Dr Jame Monroe Smith resigned president of Louisiana State University accused of embezzling $100 000 The officers planned to fly Smith to Louisiana and return his wife who surrendered with him Saturday by automobile.
Tokyo dispatches report that Japanese forces surrounded 4,000 Outer Mongolian troops on the Manchurian frontier after a major clash with Soviet sponsored units. Other reports say three Russian planes were shot down in two engagements and Japanese Manchurian forces captured thirty Russian tanks.
In Mount Vernon Kentucky on July 3 a Louisville and Nashville freight train struck a boulder rolling from a mountainside killing three crew members. Fireman W. Goebel engineer E. J. Weever and brakeman C. Long died in the crash.
Visiting sportsmen at Lake Fannin enjoyed a successful day as fish bit eagerly. A 41 pound bass caught by Mr Phillips of Cherokee Tex earned top honors for the morning, with unusually good catches reported throughout.
A delegation of nine Pannin County 4 H Club girls will travel with sponsors to College Station for the 4 H Club short course at Texas A M from July 5 to 7. The Chamber of Commerce provides bus transportation and about 2 500 youths are expected to attend.
A Bonham recreation push urged by Roy Richard Morgan seeks WPA support to fund supervised youth activities. A 6000 can shipment was wired for the Fannin county hot lunch project, joining 9000 cans received earlier with 5000 filled by vegetables and 4000 awaiting filling. Recent rains boosted project gardens, and the hot lunch operation is expected to resume Wednesday after a July Fourth shutdown.
Reports from Tientsin and Peiping state that Japanese puppet authorities demand joint control of British and French concessions in the city. The moves accompany Anglo Japanese tensions and include currency policy cooperation and scrutiny of publications and firms opposing the pro‑Soviet leadership.
Mr and Mrs Erle Sparkman and Mrs Sparkman's parents Mr and Mrs G V Smith of Corsicana depart tonight for a journey through the Rio Grande Valley and into Old Mexico. Mr Sparkman serves as Bonham agent for the Railway Express company. Mr Smith is rural supervisor for the Farm Security Administration in Navarro County.
Sam H Bothwell, former city manager of Greet-Water Wan, is named city manager of Fort Worth at a salary of 10000 a year. He succeeds Dudley J L Lewis, ousted by the city council last week, in a move affecting local government. The Bonham Fourth of July celebration will feature Bird Brand Cowboys, with no plans for them to attend, per a wire from Armstrong folks. Margarine makers from Meadowlake and Sirnin will have a representative on the grounds during the celebration per J B DeFord.
By noon today the holiday period claimed 279 lives nationwide with many deaths from highway crashes and drownings. Texas reported 17 fatalities including nine from auto accidents as the weekend Independence observance continued.
Admission of a new class of girls for nurses training at Allen Memorial Hospital was reported by superintendent Mrs A Hunnicutt. The new students include Helen McKinney Sherman Elizabeth Chitwood Ector Nowana McRae Bonham and Sybil Jackson Randolph with more to join in September.
North Bay Ont July 3 Oliva Dionne sues Dr Alen Roy Dafoe claiming the physician profited from the quintuplets via private contracts with 43 corporations. He seeks court orders to inspect Dafoe's income and turn over all earnings to the quintuplets' trust.
Grayson County voters decide on the sale of beer with results showing 3,224 against and 585 in favor in a special election. Denison turnout boosted county totals as voting continued through the day, with references to past margins and legal status of beer in 1933. See ELECTION Back Page.
