Fires scorch nearly six thousand acres across East Texas
The Texas Forest Service reports 158 woodland and grass fires over a three day span in 56 counties. Fires burned 5,942 acres with the largest blaze in Leon County at 2,400 acres and another 1,500 acre fire hit areas in Walker and Houston counties including a pine plantation.

Bonham School Board fills three faculty vacancies
The Bonham school board elected Jy Griffitt to a new speech therapy post in Plan A, appointed Edleyn Anders to LH Rather, and installed Linda Vaught as physical education teacher. Ronald Ford was chosen school nurse. They also scheduled the annual trustee election for April 3 and discussed demolition bids for the old Bailey high gym. Partly cloudy and warmer conditions are forecast for Bonham Wednesday by the National Weather Service. Lows near 30 degrees and highs in the upper 50s, with light variable winds. A small morning reading of 30 occurred, after a day with drizzle that brought .29 inches of rain this month, and a strong north wind easing by night.

Plane Crashes in Parking Lot With Marijuana Intercepted
A plane carrying about 1000 pounds of Mexican marijuana attempted an emergency landing in a shopping center lot and crashed near a Houston street. The pilot was unharmed and disappeared. authorities sealed the site. The craft, stolen from Hobby Airport, ran out of fuel and stopped 30 feet from a residence. The marijuana was in wrapped cardboard boxes.

Frank Svoboda 80 former Bonham Daily Favorite owner publisher died in Fannin County hospital after a heart attack. He founded KFYN radio and Bonham Furniture Store and served in Rotary American Legion and Methodist church. Survived by wife Adele two children three siblings six grandchildren and a host of relatives. Funeral services held at Wise Funeral chapel with graveside rites in Bold Springs West.

Two Die in Refugio County Car Crash Near Woodsboro
Two Bayside residents Mariana Castillo 43 and Santana Castillo 96 died in a two car collision 2.3 miles south of Woodsboro along FM 136 in Refugio County. Injured were Robert Lynn Castillo 4 and Jerry Vasquez 26. the younger Castillo and Vasquez were treated and released after hospital care.

Ford urges tax cuts and payroll hikes in State of the Union
President Ford used a 47 minute State of the Union to push a “new realism” for 1975 with tax cuts and higher payroll taxes to fund Social Security while expanding Medicare, offering housing aid, tax incentives for investment and energy reform.
