A freight train collided with a rural school bus near Stevenson Alabama killing four children and injuring eight others. Driver Charles Beavers survived with noncritical injuries. Several victims were relatives of Beavers and the bus was en route to a local school.
A Bonham wedding anniversary mix up prompts humor as the town records a belated note of celebration. The Bonham Civil Air Patrol Junior Cadet Corps gains momentum with 43 boys at its first meeting and a planned second gathering in the jail basement. Max Untersee Carl Prichard and John F Cantrell lead revival efforts. The CAP space is air conditioned for year round use.
Six Bonham youths escaped uninjured when the car they rode in overturned on a curve on North Center street and landed upside down in a bar ditch. Police said driver Donald Bennett lost control. the car was demolished but all occupants walked away.
Texas shivers under an Arctic air mass with up to seven inches of snow in the Panhandle and forecasting more flurries across North Central and Northwest Texas. A 74 year old woman, Emma Clift, froze to death near her son's home as freezing conditions extend statewide.
President Eisenhower proposed fiscal 1961 space outlays totaling 918 million dollars with NASA receiving 600 million for civilian programs including Mercury as it enters operational phase. Military astronau tics would get 318 million, and actual manned space flights may occur in 1961.

Voters in Ladonia and Pecan Gap approved merging the districts by 271 to 54. Ladonia's side was 169 to 8, Pecan Gap 102 to 46. Start of the 1960 61 term set. enrollment 439. first five grades stay local while sixth to eighth go to Pecan Gap and high school to Ladonia.
Examinations will begin Thursday morning and run through Friday January 22 according to principal M B Nelson. The second semester starts Monday January 25.

Mrs. Alice Steel Taylor of Tampa, Florida, identifies the mystery man aboard the ill fated DC-7B that crashed in the Gulf of Mexico November 16, killing 42. She says the man is her missing salesman husband, William Allen Taylor, 58.
President Adolfo Lopez Mateos leaves Caracas for Brazil on the second leg of a six nation Latin American goodwill tour. He discussed expanding technical cooperation with Venezuela in oil and steel and noted plans for an exchange of Mexican technicians for Venezuelan industry. A CBS? embassy said Mexico would participate in Venezuelan steel. He urged faster industrialization to raise living standards.
Fiscal 1961 budget at a glance shows no general tax cut in 1960 with a possible future cut. Gasoline levy up by a half cent, most existing taxes kept. Postal rates rise to five cents for regular and eight cents for air mail. Spending reaches 798 billion dollars, up 1.4 billion from the current year with boosts for space, farm price supports, veterans benefits and interest on debt. Revenues total 84 billion, up 5.4 billion, and a 42 billion surplus is anticipated.
President Eisenhower urged Congress to enact urgent changes to the farm price support program to curb wheat surpluses and support farm income. He sent a $5.623 billion farm budget for the new fiscal year, larger than last year but below 1959, and proposed a six point legislative program including revisions to price supports, extending the conservation reserve, boosting food for peace efforts, raising rural loan rates, and consolidating loan authority.
