Bonham residents will march on Monday night January 25 starting at 7 p.m. to raise funds for the March of Dimes polio program and to support arthritis and birth defect research. Volunteers will be assigned small areas to limit calls while supporters back the polio fund.
Mrs. David Ray, long a Fairbanks Alaska teacher, returns to Joshua Texas after placing a small ad in The Daily Favorite. The ad sparked word of a vacancy, she applied, and secured a teaching position while recalling local visits in Bonham and New Zion. Dan Ray family in Korea reports their measles illness has passed.
Leon Red Harper Friday publicly taunts Sheriff Hoyt Ivey by inviting a dominoes game while declining to face Odell Hyepock saying Hyepock would beat the daylights out of him.
Jan 31 is the deadline for paying city, school, county and state ad valorem taxes and city and state poll taxes. Poll taxes affect eligibility to vote in local and state elections. Feb 1 is the final day for candidates to file for a place on the ballot in the Democratic primary May 7.
Lawrence Worth Hoskins of Buda Texas seeks 193695.24 from the U S government for serious injuries after an Air Force ambulance crashed into the car he rode in in Laredo. He alleges speeding and other violations by the driver John H Cahill and that the ambulance did not yield the right of way or stop at a sign.
In Havana soldiers marched 145 accused counter revolutionaries into La Cabana theater for a nightlong mass trial on plots to overthrow Fidel Castro with Dominican help. Defense attorneys prepared as 51 witnesses, including Castro, Raul Castro, and Maj. William Morgan. The nine ringleaders face up to 30 years. others 20 to 25 years.
Mrs Leah Medlock, 70, told Judge John F. Mead Jr. it was time for her to obtain a divorce. She testified she has not seen her husband Gene since he left for World War I in 1918. She heard he was in California about 20 years ago and said he is not coming back. She was granted the divorce.
Federal agents probe Julian Frank possible link to an underworld Cuban currency ring as they investigate the National Airlines DC6B crash that killed 34 people on Jan 6. Officials say internal explosion theories persist while Frank’s family and finances are examined amid sensational accusations.
The University of Texas Bureau of Business Research says Texas winter crops will be plentiful with lettuce and carrots. Winter carrot acreage rises about 20 percent from 1959, mainly in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Lettuce production estimated at 48.8 million pounds, up 16.3 million from last year.
Backers of the civil rights bill hope to generate signatures for a discharge petition next week to move the measure from the Rules Committee. By week’s end 166 of 432 House members had signed, including about 20 Republicans, as support from church and labor groups grows. The bill would permit federal review of local voting records, impose penalties for obstructing school desegregation, and ensure schooling for servicemen’s children when local schools close in integration disputes.

Blood spots were found on the exterior of the automobile linked to Dr. George H. Mickey LSU biology professor and dean in the murder of Dr. Margaret McMillan. Investigators noted the time of death and described the attack as fatal, with evidence suggesting a roadside confrontation near the Mississippi River levee.
FBI agents investigating a New York Miami crash that killed 34 people explore a possible murder by self destruction linked to a separate Jan. 6 National Airlines DC-6B crash. They focus on attorney Julian Frank as a suspect in a plot to blow up the plane to enable his widow to collect nearly 900000 in life insurance.
Midland police said Cecil Grady 29 ex convict found bludgeoned to death in a field near Sterling City was identified as the victim. Investigators probed Grady background and sought a suspect seen near Sterling City early Friday.
