At the United Nations Security Council debate on the Middle East, Soviet Ambassador Yakov Malik and Chinese deputy Lai Yali traded insults over who supports Israel. Lai accused Moscow of supplying manpower to Israel while the U.S. funds arms. Malik charged China with provoking Arab-Israeli tension.
Lebanese air force jets bombed Damour on the coast and the Sabra refugee camp as Moslem-leftist and Palestinian forces besiege Beirut area towns. Airport traffic halted after mortars hit a runway. Fights across Lebanon kill 112 and wound 250 in 48 hours. total dead reached about 8,600 with 18,500 wounded since April. Moslem gunmen press along the coast toward Karantina as Christian lines hold Beirut's quarters.
Seventy five new Democratic congressmen who arrived in January are returning with a focus on passing voter friendly legislation to secure reelection. They will press four committee chairmen for action on health insurance revenue sharing tax reform and campaign reform and emphasize staying close to constituents via mobile offices and local meetings.
Bonham Chamber of Commerce directors heard a daylong seminar led by Coy Stanphill TP&L on selling Bonham to industry. Speakers cited strong water supply labor force and potential sites yet noted housing shortages. They urged positive active involvement and cooperation with agriculture and regional planning for growth.

Thousands of Soviet backed troops in Angola launched large offensives in the north and south. An armored column of about 1000 soldiers, supported by Cuban forces and Russian advisers, moved toward Luso while pro Western forces fight to hold positions near Luanda. In the north the Popular Movement forced NPLAA forces from HQs and seized arms and aircraft.
Presidential press secretary Ronald Nessen said Ford will stay in the race and not tailor appeals to the South. He dismissed claims the South is a separate entity and said Reagan's challenge could sharpen Ford’s focus on administration policies.
A National Governors Conference survey finds state tax revenues failed to keep pace with inflation as expenditures rose 15 percent from fiscal 1974 to 1975. States tapped surpluses and cut spending to bridge the gap, while recession pushed up costs.
