Machinist mate Girard Trahn from Central Falls Rhode Island survived the deadly blast on the USS Enterprise flight deck after a massive explosion and fire tore through the nuclear carrier. A major fire and explosions crippled the 90 000 ton carrier Enterprise 75 miles southwest of Hawaii during a training flight. 24 crewmen killed 17 missing 85 injured with 1 000 rescuers involved. Planes and aircraft stores were destroyed as the ship returned to Pearl Harbor for recovery.
