Jaycees Run Poll Tax Drive Succeeds in Bonham
The Bonham Jaycees sold 125 state and 36 city poll tax receipts over Friday and Saturday in their first venture. Eleven members worked in two man teams at a drive on courthouse lawn and plan more sales on Jan 20 and Jan 27. County tax collector Henry Joe Fletcher estimated sales would have missed about 100 state taxes without the drive. City officials praised the effort and local buyers noted they might not have paid without the sale.

Dutch navy says it sank two Indonesian torpedo boats
The Dutch navy reported sinking two Indonesian motor torpedo boats off southern Dutch New Guinea and driving a third from the coast in an apparent aborted invasion attempt. Captain Elbers said radar showed a fleet approaching. a motor torpedo boat was sunk and a second damaged while a third fled. No Dutch ships were hit. Eleven Escapees Recaptured in New Mexico
Eleven federal prisoners escaped from Bernalillo County jail armed with knives and broom handles but were all recaptured before dawn. The last five were found hiding under a truck on a main street in Albuquerque. Recaptures occurred in Santa Fe, Socorro, and Carrizozo, with two in Socorro taken after police shot out a stolen car’s tires. None resisted.

Super Echo Balloon Falls Apart in Test Flight
UPI reports a 13 story super echo balloon was launched from Cape Canaveral by an 84 foot Thor rocket at 6 06 a m. The balloon inflated then self destructed within about 20 minutes due to an apparent ejection system malfunction.
