A nationwide GM strike paused as representatives of General Motors and United Auto Workers agreed to open negotiations for a permanent settlement. Plants with active strikes will not operate during talks. some closed plants may reopen on a reduced basis to ease distress.
The labor relations board ordered William R Hearst and five Hearst companies to offer Frank Lynch and Philip Everhardt Armstrong their former positions at the Seattle Post Intelligencer. Their discharge last summer triggered a strike and the paper’s publication was suspended. the Seattle Build claimed the dismissal tied to guild activity.

McKinney January 14 two men were held in Collin County jail while officers checked their identities for possible connection with the Charles Mattson kidnapping and slaying. Deputy W. Button said one man strongly resembled a newspaper photo of Fred Orrin Haynes, a former inmate wanted in California. The men were arrested at Farmersville around noon and could not identify themselves. Sheriff E B Moore fingerprinted them and sent prints to the FBI in Washington.
