About 5,000 Allied troops stormed the Batangan peninsula in central Vietnam in a major amphibious operation led by U.S. Marines and South Vietnamese forces. 3,009 Marines came ashore by helicopter and landing craft while 2,000 infantrymen formed a cordon to trap retreating forces.
