Low Record For Week End Deaths In Texas

A new low for holiday weekend deaths in Texas was reported by United Press. In 72 hours eight violent deaths were logged, mostly from car accidents. Port Arthur saw fog delay shipping as a tugboat crewmate drowned after stepping from a gangplank. Nationwide toll reached 300 with highway crashes contributing 72 deaths along with other causes.

Woman Attempts Force Entrance Into White House

An unidentified young woman tried to force entry to the White House in Washington on January 2. She demanded a sightseeing tour and was refused since the mansion was closed to visitors. Guards did not release her name. her husband said she had been in health.

France Erects Strong Defense Port in Tunisia

Bizerta Tunisia January 2 France has built a major naval base ringed with steel and giant guns able to fire 25 miles into the Sicily channel. The base sits in a natural lake on the Tunisian coast opposite Italy and controls the eastern Mediterranean bottleneck. Premier Daladier aboard the cruiser Foch will visit Bizerta to warn Italy and the world that France will yield no ground in the Mediterranean.

Seven Drownings After Car Plunges Into Creek

In Greenville Alabama seven people died when a sedan crashed through a bridge railing and plunged 20 feet into Pigeon Creek. Victims include William Sexton and his wife, their two daughters, a son Filmett Ray Sexton, grandson Bruce Crews four, and granddaughter Sarah Davison. Kendrick Thomas survived after escaping through a window and swimming to shore.

Greenville Truck Damaged Near Gober This Morning

Joe Bailey of Greenville drove Finney's 1938 Model V-8 truck into a ditch near Gober about 9 30 am to avoid a car in the road. Cab radiator and body were badly damaged. The truck was taken to Greens Courage in Bancham for repairs and was formerly owned by Burnett's Bakery in Greenville.

1939 housing industry seen as bright spot for economy
