A mixed batch of brief items reports accidents, arrests, elections, and notable events across Texas and nearby states. Incidents include a child falling into a barrel in Lamesa, a skating accident in Oklahoma City, and a Polish pianist’s farewell in Dallas.
In Newberry Massachusetts on February 28 a town record marks a rare moment as Mrs Bertram Law gives birth to twins for the first time in a century. The newborns are two boys named Edward and Savage.
Odell Castle, a youth south of Windom, suffered a serious leg injury when a horse fell on him Saturday. Both leg bones were broken. he was taken to the hospital in this city for treatment and will remain in bed for several days.
Nearly 300 demonstrations drew over 2000 women to the first annual Home Demonstration Club cheese show in the Peeler Building. Some 92 entries were judged by Evan Thomas of A M College with Mrs Allan Spies winning a trip to College. Attendance, revenue, and production figures highlighted a thriving farm women effort as 5964 pounds of cheese were produced with an estimated value around $900.
GENEVA Feb 29. Naotake Sato told the League of Nations council Japan is willing to hold a Shanghai round table conference with the powers to discuss the Settlement trouble once the Chinese army withdraws sufficiently. He said Japan seeks no Chinese territory.
Sir John Simon told the League of Nations that Chinese and Japanese commanders in Shanghai agreed to withdraw from the front line and seek an armistice. The accord is being sent to Nanking and Tokyo for confirmation.
The Navy Department ordered almost the entire fleet to the Pacific. A training squadron with a battleship six destroyers and a special service squadron of one cruiser and two destroyers will participate, while a large fleet already operates there. A few smaller ships and three battleships are still modernizing in the Atlantic.
Nanking reports the Chinese government will send an expedition against the newly created independent state in Manchuria, a region sponsored by Japan, signaling a shift from peace to potential military action.
Kilgore Texas February 28 A surge of toll roads appears as roads become impassable after heavy rain. Kilgore Chamber of Commerce orders survey of oil field tolls. Ivor Bilberg, vice president, says eleven toll roads lie within two miles of Kilgore and many landless men fix charges after leasing land.
Dan Moody left for Washington to argue Governor Sterling’s appeal before the Supreme Court. The case challenges a three judge district court ruling restraining use of martial law to enforce proration in East Texas oil fields. GE YF Smith accompanied Moody. The pair aimed for a stay of the injunction pending constitutional decision and Moody planned to explore Reconstruction Finance Corp status of Texas aid.
In Houston on February 29 George Thompson a Negro city employee was killed as striking garbage workers returned to work. E J Welch a former police investigator now with a transportation company said he fired as rocks flew. Authorities said the man was a plant worker not a striker or replacement.
In Bellingham Washington on February 28 a loyal airedale named Scruffy worked to reach Harold Aerie one of four men buried by a Skagit River slide. The dog began digging Thursday noon as the slide buried rescuers and vehicles under snow and dirt.
A. E. Erwin, 40, of Pecos was killed and B. D. Richardson, 20, also of Pecos, seriously injured when their car struck a bridge abutment on the Fort Worth highway today according to Associated Press reports from Fort Worth.
Denison Texas February 28 11 year old Charles Bodkin son of Mr and Mrs Harry Bodkin was drowned after falling into an abandoned well one mile east of Denison. He was pulled from the water by friends and city workers tried to revive him. Funeral services are planned for Tuesday morning.
Shanghai dispatch notes a fierce artillery bombardment driving Chinese forces back from Chapel after Kiang Wan fell. Japanese and Chinese talks, led by Admiral Sir Howard Kelly, ended without an accord. Japan demands Chinese retreat twenty kilometers and vows broader operations if reinforcements continue.
Tokyo dispatch says Consul Yamaguchi reports 160000 Russian soldiers stationed at Vladivostok and along the Ussuri Railway with recent arrivals from Europe. New heavy artillery and anti aircraft defenses guard Vladivostok harbor as food and military supplies move continually. Russians expect conflict with Japan over Manchuria or fisheries.
Washington reports N'gi the sick National Zoo gorilla has influenza and is improving, as Speaker Garner admits a severe cold and says he feels sympathy with the animal. Garner, a Texas visitor, cites his own illness during daily press briefings.
Bentonville Arkansas on February 28 news reports a new $75,000 hospital to be erected under the terms of the late Mrs. J A Bates will, benefiting the city and its residents.
East Texas will rise to 83 with a low around 54 as clouds increase tonight. West Texas expects cloudy skies with likely showers and a chance of local rain Tuesday.
On a German farm in Hamm on February 28 a Rhode Island Red hen was reported by the West Java state chicken farm of the Department of Agriculture to have laid 308 eggs last year. The bird missed only Sundays and holidays and produced 693 ounces of eggs, eight times her own weight, with an average egg size of 2.23 ounces.
In an Englander advertisement a single word was omitted altering meaning. The copy stated The A. Englander Co. never purchases a second grade piece of merchandise disguised under the name of irregular. The word Never was omitted triggering the wrong message. Apologies are offered to Mr Englander.
Free kindergarten benefit presented by Bonham Rotary Club at 7 30 pm features Little Miss Clyde Holder as announcer and a program including Kindergarten songs Rhythm Band Tom Thumb Wedding Minuette Making Old Glory America. Tickets cost one dime and proceeds aid the Free Kindergarten in need of funds.
Gerald Jones, a deserter from Washington D C, turned himself in to local recruiting officers in Memphis Tennessee. He explained he would rather go to war than seek civilian work after overstaying his 1928 leave and fearing repatriation.
In Atlanta on February 28 a dramatic incident ended in tragedy and new life. Betty Jean, 18 months old, choked and died at home as Mrs. Kuhling, pregnant, rushed to a local hospital to save her child, delivering a second daughter in the maternity ward hours later.
