Thousands of Polish students protested in Warsaw today in the biggest anti German demonstration since the 5 year old non aggression pact. More than 2 000 students tried to march on the German embassy after mass meetings at four universities and colleges but were driven back by police and firemen with hoses.
Senator Tom Connally of Texas proposed a 5 cent increase to the 3 cent per pound processing tax on imported vegetable oils to protect cotton seed and other domestic oil products. He cited 1928 import totals and said foreign oils compete with U.S. oils. Ralph W. Moore, Granger, praised the amendment, endorsed by Texas farm groups.
Oil proration held up as Texas House debate stalled a bill extending the oil proration law to 1941. Rep Leighton Cornett questioned timing while supporters of natural resource taxes argued for action. Bonham hosts the Pannin County Interscholastic League tournament opening at the Bonham gym with several games, forfeit and schedule changes noted. Tonight Bonham meets Leonard at 8 o'clock. public urged to attend.
Texas lawmakers rushed to file up to midnight, tallying nearly 750 bills and 38 constitutional amendments. Proposed measures include free textbooks for all children, making the state superintendent a constitutional officer with a $6,000 salary, and directing auto and gas tax revenue to highways with school reserve.
Denison Texas February 24 E R Cook a 45 year old brakeman had both legs amputated above the knee at the Missouri Kansas Texas Railroad Hospital after an accident while switching in the Whitesboro yards.
The second general meeting of teachers is in session this afternoon at the Bonham High School auditorium despite bad weather. Attendance was reduced as several teachers and trustees could not attend, and Bonham schools released at noon to allow full participation. Texas pine print paper was used last week in a Dallas News edition.
United Press reports government decreed tax increases affecting both rich and middle class. An official statement cites social measures to reduce inequality and simple necessity in new policy. An average middle class family will pay about $40 more per year in income taxes.
Bonham progresses on a $182,000 paving project with rock quarrying for base in the Claude McClure farm area southeast of Bonham. Weather delays slow work but Mayor Joe Hrdlicka says excavation on South Main Street will continue as rock bottom gravel and asphalt are prepared for 187 miles of streets. Sixty five men are employed, with more to join soon, using 14 000 cubic yards of rock and 10 000 cubic yards of gravel plus 7500 tons of asphalt for final topping.
Paris February 24 The French chamber of deputies backed the Daladier government on a move toward de jure recognition of Generalissimo Franco in Nationalist Spain. Daladier said he would present recognition to the cabinet today as part of the government’s plan. Kansas City Missouri A black cat distracted a would be robber as Mrs Lydia Scholz opened her door. The intruder demanded her watch but the cat’s sudden dash allowed her to seize a revolver and the man fled.
Washington February 24 The National Labor Relations Board certified the American Communications Association CIO affiliate as exclusive bargaining agent for 13,000 employees of the Postal Telegraph Company in 45 states.
Grandma Eadie Cornett, age 112, dropped her pipe and sang hymns as Dallas county convalescent home staff and neighbors visited to congratulate her on the birthday. Born in 1814 in Missouri and moving to Texas in 1851, she plans a belated party with cake and 112 candies, and continues to enjoy reading and pipe smoking.
The Texas House passed a measure to convert Arlington and Stephenville State Junior Colleges into four-year colleges by a vote of 82 to 59 amid heated debate. Representatives clashed over funding and education policy as the bill drew strong lines on state education and taxes. A separate note reports Franklin Pierce McCall, a 21-year-old minister, executed in Raiford for kidnap murder, confessing he was innocent. A Newark woman sues for divorce amid a jaded view of modern life.
Miss Juanita Spinks was named assistant home management supervisor for the Parma Security Administration in Fannin County. A graduate of West Texas State Teachers College, she joins the Bonham staff to aid low income farmers. Officials say 10,000 Texas farmers have already received help this season and loans are now available to those previously unserved.
Army engineers in charge of the Red River dam and survey project will open field offices in Durant Oklahoma on March 1. Thirty men will be employed on the survey in the Durant area.
AUSTIN February 24 Two women state lawmakers Mrs. Margaret Gordon of Waco and Mrs. Neveille Colson of Navasota declined to sponsor a Beauchamp drafted bill to abolish the Texas death penalty. Gordon said a male sponsor would be needed and called the bill a sissy measure if not.
San Francisco shipping nearly stopped as a labor dispute blocked the waterfront. Employers accuse the CIO affiliated ship clerks union of contracting violations, halting work by ship checkers and clerks today.
Mayor Joe Hrdlicka will travel to Durant Oklahoma Monday night to appear on a floor show at a dance sponsored by the Acapella Choir of Southeastern Teachers College. The event funds the choir for their San Antonio Federated Music Club program appearance. The mayor, noted for popular entertainment in Durant and Bryan County, will perform several vocal selections in addition to his lent poker game.
Robert Pershing Wadlow, 21, the Alton, Illinois giant at 8 foot 12 inches and 481 pounds, wins a court move in a 50 000 damage suit against Dr Charles Humbert for a medical paper in the American Medical Journal that Wadlow says damaged his reputation. His father says the suit rests on his son's normal condition aside from height.
